Oxford’s Fairytale Market 🎈

When visiting a new country, local markets are the best way to dive deep into everyday life. Oxford’s Covered Market completely charmed me – it felt like stepping into a fairytale! 🧚✨ This historic market, known as The Covered Market, is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year 🎉. Banners and decorations everywhere highlight its long, vibrant history. Originally built in the 18th century to organize messy street stalls, it started with just 20 butcher shops at the west entrance of High Street. The oldest structures date back to 1774! Over time, it evolved into the diverse indoor market it is today. Maybe it was because of the anniversary celebrations – the market was adorned with beautiful fairy lights, dressed-up rabbits 🐇, a little girl floating from the ceiling 👧, mushroom forests 🍄, and more. It’s easy to see connections to Alice in Wonderland, which was born right here in Oxford! Though not very large, the market is packed with traditional food stalls, colorful flower shops 🌸, gift stores 🎁, fresh fruit and vegetable stands 🍓, cheese counters 🧀, butcher shops, and much more. There’s plenty to see, taste, and explore! 📍 Address: Market St, Oxford OX1 3DZ, UK #UK #Oxford #OxfordUniversity #NewYearTravel #LocalMarket #HiddenGem #FairytaleVibes 🛍️✨
