Real-Life Dragonstone: A Mystical Atlantic Pilgrimage
On the coast of Spain’s northern Basque Country, near Bilbao, lies a dramatic rocky island with over 1,000 years of history.🌊 Known as the "Great Wall of the Sea" or "Dragon’s Back Coast," it famously served as Dragonstone in Game of Thrones. Its real name — Gaztelugatxe (pronounced "gaz-tel-oo-gat-che") — means "rugged castle" in Basque, perfectly describing its awe-inspiring appearance: a stone bridge resembling a dragon’s spine connects the cliff to the island, with 241 steps leading to a chapel perched above the Atlantic.✨ Though not part of the official Camino de Santiago route, many pilgrims detour here. The Chapel of San Juan (Ermita de San Juan) dates back to the 9th century and was dedicated to protecting sailors navigating the treacherous Bay of Biscay. It’s said that ringing the bell and making a wish here brings good luck!✨ 🚘 Transport: Drive to Gaztelugatxe (30 km from Bilbao, ~40 minutes). Parking is available near the entrance. 🍽️ Food & Drinks: Small restaurants and snack stalls exist near the parking lot, but there are no facilities on the island. The hike takes about 1 hour (steep and uneven) — bring water and snacks! ⚠️ Important: Admission is FREE, but reservations are required on busy days (see blue dates on the 2025 calendar in the last image).
