Saltee Island | South of Dublin, Go See the Puffins
⭐️The adorable Puffins are too cute! These charming sea parrots can only be seen from April to mid-July, along with several other bird species. If you want to see them, I highly recommend booking your tickets on the Saltee Ferry as soon as possible! Each ticket costs 30 euros. ⭐️The island is incredibly pristine and picturesque. The dock doesn't have a pier, so you'll need to disembark by stepping into the water, which is covered in seaweed. It's a bit soft and slippery, and the water is shallow, reaching just below the knee. I suggest bringing waterproof shoe covers or taking off your shoes and socks. ⭐️There are no restrooms on the island, so I recommend using the facilities at the dock before boarding. Apart from the designated trails for visitors, the island is mostly covered in low shrubs. Route 1️⃣ From the city center of Dublin, you can take the Wexford Bus (740) or the Expressway Bus (2) to Redmond Square in Wexford town. Both journeys take about two and a half hours and cost the same. You can use your Leap Card on both buses. For a round trip, buy a return ticket on the way there and simply tap your Leap Card again on the way back without being charged twice. The only difference is the timetable and some stops. I chose the 740 because its schedule suited me better, but it was delayed, causing me to miss the connecting bus from Wexford town to Kilmore Quay dock. I had to take a taxi instead. 2️⃣ From Redmond Square in the center of Wexford town, take bus 390 to Kilmore Quay dock. The journey takes about an hour. Bus 390 is extremely punctual, so you'll need to arrive early. It doesn't wait for anyone and, if I recall correctly, runs only every two hours. If you miss it, don't wait for the next one—just take a taxi. 3️⃣ At Kilmore Quay dock, look for the sign that says "Saltee Ferry"—it's easy to spot. Check in and board the ferry, which holds 12 people. The ferry ride takes about half an hour. Upon arrival, you'll transfer to a six-person speedboat to reach the shore, and then wade through the water to get to the island. If you're driving, it's much more convenient. Just navigate directly to Kilmore Quay. Near the dock, we observed three restaurants, two of which are closed on Mondays. I recommend bringing your own food and water before heading to the island. Also, pack some tissues, towels, or wet wipes, and bring your own garbage bags. #IslandTravel #Travel #MyHiddenTravelTips #TravelDiary #ScenicViews #Birds #WhatBirdIsThis #Puffin #Dublin #DayTripsFromDublin
