South Bridge Road in Singapore 🌟
The "Po" in Da Po and Xiao Po does not refer to a slope but is a mistranslation of the Hokkien (Minnan) word 🌿 which means a coastal city or port in Chinese, similar to Boat Quay along the Singapore River. 🌊 The south bank of the Singapore River was the first settlement for early Chinese immigrants. 🌿 Following the Chinese tradition of naming the larger area first, the south bank was called Da Po (Big Po). The north bank, being the second settlement, was called Xiao Po (Little Po). Initially designated for European settlers, Xiao Po gradually transformed into a Chinese settlement as 🌿 Europeans moved out and Chinese immigrants increased. 🌇 Da Po includes areas such as Chinatown, Telok Ayer, Tanjong Pagar, and Outram Park. 🌿 #Singapore 🌇🌿
