⛪ St Pancras Old Church: A Timeless Witness to London’s History

Standing as one of Europe’s oldest Christian sites (possibly dating to the 4th century!), this ancient gem has weathered storms, wars, and rebirths. The current structure, rooted in the 11th–12th centuries, nestles near the long-buried River Fleet (see my sketch!). 🌀 A Rollercoaster Past 13th century: Damaged 14th century: Rebuilt 16th century: Abandoned 17th century: Restored 19th century: Reconstructed (with a new bell tower replacing the medieval west tower). Civil War: Used as Cromwell’s army barracks/stables—treasures buried for safekeeping were lost, then rediscovered during 1800s renovations! 🏛️ Hidden Traces Though little medieval fabric remains, spot the exposed Norman masonry on the north wall of the nave—a silent whisper from the 1100s. 📍 Visit & Reflect 📌 Address: Pancras Rd, London NW1 1UL 🚇 Nearest Tube: King’s Cross St Pancras 🌿 Bonus: The churchyard inspired Hardy’s Tree (where tombstones circle an ash tree, moved during railway construction). #LondonHistory #HiddenChurches #MedievalLondon
