The cathedral is not large, but if you want to listen to all the information on the digital plaques and buy souvenirs, it might take around 1.5 hours. 📖 Fun Fact Time: Every year on March 17, ☘️ St Patrick’s Day 🇮🇪 is Ireland’s national day and also the feast day of St Patrick. Take the opportunity to learn about this missionary and Ireland’s biggest holiday during your visit to the cathedral. This 5th-century Roman Catholic missionary and Irish bishop (he was not Irish, but a Roman from Britain) was kidnapped as a slave by Irish invaders at the age of 16. After escaping, he eventually returned to Ireland to spread Christianity. There are many legends surrounding the life and work of St Patrick, the most famous of which include his use of the ☘️ shamrock to explain the Christian concept of the Holy Trinity, and the legend that he drove all the snakes out of Ireland. Inside the church, there is a piece of glass etched with 39 scenes from the missionary’s life (can’t remember which one 😂, friends who are interested can listen carefully to the audio guide). St Patrick’s Day celebrations typically include public parades, festive carnivals, and traditional Irish music sessions (céilithe), with people dressing in green and wearing shamrocks. (This parade tradition started in North America in the 18th century before spreading to Ireland.) During St Patrick’s Day celebrations, the tradition of “drowning the shamrock” is popular. At the end of the celebration, the shamrock is placed at the bottom of a cup, which is then filled with whiskey 🥃, beer 🍺, cider, or other alcoholic beverages 🍷. The toast is made to St Patrick and those present, and the drink is downed.
