🌲 The Hidden Treasures of Asplund & Lewerentz
The visitor center at Skogskyrkogården (Woodland Cemetery) may look modern at first glance, but inside lies a rare exhibition dedicated to the legendary architects Erik Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz! 🏛️✨ I initially wanted to visit the chapel, but after asking the staff, I learned all Swedish-language tours were fully booked—with almost no English options available. 😔 Just as I was about to leave disappointed, the staff asked, "What do you do?" When I mentioned I was an architecture editor for AD China, their faces lit up! "Come with us—there’s something you’ll love!" And they were right! Behind the scenes was a treasure trove of archival materials—original sketches, design documents, and even Asplund’s custom furniture for the chapel. 📜✏️ 🏗️ The Story Behind Tallum Pavilion When Skogskyrkogården opened in 1920, it needed functional spaces for workers maintaining the grounds and chapels. Gunnar Asplund designed Ekonomigården (completed in 1923), which housed: ✔️ Lockers & changing rooms ✔️ A dining hall + laundry area ✔️ Tool/seed storage ✔️ A domed central office (for payroll!) Later renamed Tallum Pavilion, this building is now the visitor center—and I’m so glad I didn’t miss it! 📸 Why Architects Will Geek Out Here: Original blueprints of the UNESCO-listed cemetery Lewerentz’s minimalist details (his signature style!) Asplund’s chapel furniture—functional yet poetic 📍 Skogskyrkogården (Stockholm, Sweden) Fun Fact: The cemetery’s landscape design was so revolutionary, it became a model for modern cemeteries worldwide. 🌍 #Design #DesignInspiration #Architects #ArchitectureLovers #InteriorDesign #Architecture #ArchitecturalPhotography #DesignHistory #HiddenGems #NordicDesign #ArchitecturalMarvels
