It might be the end of an era, but **“FAREwell, MetroCard”** will ensure that the NYC legend gets a proper sendoff before the [**OMNY Card**](https://secretnyc.co/how-to-get-an-omny-card/) swoops in. The New **York Transit Museum’s** new exhibit explores the MetroCard’s inception, the technology behind the fare system, and all of its significant moments along the way. (Who else still has their [*SVU* MetroCards](https://secretnyc.co/limited-edition-law-and-order-svu-metrocards/) in safe keeping?) If you’re not quite ready to say goodbye, we recommend a pitstop to this new exhibit this [**December**](https://secretnyc.co/things-to-do-in-december-in-nyc-2025/). All about **“FAREwell, MetroCard”** ----------------------------------- According to a brief from the museum, “When the MetroCard debuted in 1994, its mission was twofold: introduce new technology to the transit system and speed the elimination of tokens as a way to pay fares. In the decades that followed, the MetroCard became almost as iconic as the token itself, bearing safety reminders, commemorating anniversaries, and celebrating cultural moments.” Needless to say, the little yellow card deserves a moment of recognition, no? “The MetroCard bridged the gap between tokens and technology, and ‘FAREwell, MetroCard’ reminds us how innovation, design, and human experience come together to shape the way we move through the city,” New York Transit Museum Acting Director Regina Shepherd said. She added, “As OMNY ushers in a new era of fare payment, it’s important to remember the milestones that brought us here.” There are plenty of other ways to bid adieu: a [**citywide MetroCard sendoff**](https://secretnyc.co/mta-metrocard-sendoff-nyc-experiences/) is also underway, featuring themed cookies from Zabar, to the “Metro” slice at Stretch Pizza: vodka sauce, fior di latte, chicken cutlet, spicy Calabrian chili, garlic pesto cream and grated parm, to name just a few.
