The New Museum, Manhattan’s Sole Hub Exclusively For Contemporary Art, Reopens This March After A 60,000 Sqft Expansion — And It’s Free On Opening Weekend
This spring, art enthusiasts will *finally* be able to return to the New Museum on the Bowery. One of the most anticipated **museum openings of 2026**, this expansion doubles the space by 60,000 square feet and offers enticing new features: twice the gallery space, a new 74-seat forum, a full-service restaurant, and a dedicated studio for artists-in-residence, to name just a few changes. “Since our founding nearly 50 years ago, the New Museum has been a home for the most groundbreaking art of today and a haven for the artists who make it,” said Lisa Phillips , Toby Devan Lewis Director of the New Museum. “Our new 120,000 sq ft building on the Bowery signals our redoubled commitment to new art and new ideas, and to the museum as an ever-evolving site for risk-taking, collaboration, and experimentation.” If you’re gearing up for a year of exhibit hopping and exploration, we’ll tell you what you need to know. The New Museum announces its reopening -------------------------------------- The attraction will open its doors on Saturday, March 21st — a perfect way to usher in the new season. And we certainly appreciate complimentary admission on the opening weekend. To kick things off properly, the attraction-wide “New Humans: Memories of the Future” will feature work of over 200 artists. Per the attraction’s press release, the exhibit explores “technological and societal changes have spurred new conceptions of what it means to be ‘human.'” Although “New Humans” is certainly an exciting draw, don’t forget to check out the new commissions that will have longterm shelf life at the museum, including work from Tschabalala Self , Klára Hosnedlová , and Sarah Lucas. Should you be traveling with little art-lovers in tow, you’ll be pleased to know a new Kids Guide is available, and Free Family Days will take place the first Sunday of every month.
