The NYC Marathon With Nearly 60K Runners Was The Largest In History—For The Second Straight Year

Have a medal from the **[TCS NYC Marathon 2025](https://secretnyc.co/new-york-city-marathon-2025-guide/)**? You’re holding onto a piece of history. For a second year in a row, the event earned the title of the largest marathon *in the world* — 59,226 runners, 132 countries all across the five boroughs. We’re not surprised that the greatest city in the world is responsible for such an accomplishment. All in all, the witty signs, [**massive street closures**](https://secretnyc.co/nyc-marathon-street-closures-2025/), citywide camaraderie, and of course, the strenuous training culminated in a race that was one for the books. **TCS NYC Marathon 2025 stats** ------------------------------- [***Runner’s World***](https://www.runnersworld.com/news/a69252211/amazing-stats-2025-new-york-city-marathon/) did the nitty gritty by taking a look into the numbers behind the 26.2 mile extravaganza, and needless to say, they’re impressive. According to the publication, **Hellen** Obiri set the women’s record with a time of **2:19:51** while both **Benson Kipruto** and **Alexander Mutiso** earned the time of **2:08:09**. However, we’re more impressed with the numbers on the lower end of the spectrum, if you can believe it: **91** is the age of the oldest male runner at the 2025 event. **Two**, however, is what really blew our minds. It was the number of back-to-back **Broadway shows** actor **Jordan Litz** performed after completing the marathon. In the morning, he ran — by the afternoon and evening, he transformed into Fiyero in ***Wicked***. (We’re willing to bet he slept well Sunday night!) Although we were curious to see the record-breaking stats unfold after Sunday’s tradition, the truth is, the NYC Marathon already broke *plenty* of records this year. [**Getting a slot in the race**](https://secretnyc.co/nyc-marathon-lottery-results-2025/) alone was just as competitive as getting into Harvard — a 22% increase from 2024 resulted in over 200,000 marathon applicants, only 3% of which were accepted. “More than ever, people want to experience the magic of the TCS New York City Marathon,” **NYRR CEO Rob Simmelkjaer said** in a press release. “The TCS New York City Marathon is a special event that brings together people of all backgrounds...all united by the transformative power of running.” Where will we see you in 2026? Along the marathon route or holding up signs? (We’ll be holding up signs!)
