The Owens-Thomas House 🏰📸

📚Twelve years ago, I had the privilege of visiting what was, 200 years ago, one of the most luxurious mansions in the world. This time, I brought my sisters along to share in this extraordinary experience. 👭 ✨ Back then, Savannah, with its extensive use of slave labor, was a city of power and wealth, bearing striking similarities to the pre-war setting of "Gone with the Wind." 🌹 The Owens-Thomas House, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976, stands as a prime example of British Regency architecture. 🏛️ 💫 Constructed starting in 1816 and taking three years to complete, its design was sketched out in England by a British architect, preserving the aesthetic charm of Bath's architectural style, evident in the abundant use of golden Bath stone. 🖌️ The mansion is divided into two distinct sections: the main house for the owners and a separate building for the enslaved people who lived and worked there. 🏠 👥 This stark division serves as a poignant reminder of the era's social inequalities. Exploring the Owens-Thomas House is like stepping back in time, offering a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the elite while also acknowledging the harsh realities faced by those who served them. 🕰️ #HiddenGemsTravel #InspirationNotes #LuxuryMansions
