The Relaxed Charm of an Old-Money Style Cheese Fondue 🍴🫕

After a leisurely stroll through the Old Town of Geneva, I stumbled upon the eponymous restaurant located inside Hôtel Les Armures. This establishment is one of the oldest restaurants in Geneva, with elegant interiors adorned with antique decorations. The waitstaff, dressed in suits, epitomize the discreet yet dignified “old money” style that Switzerland is known for. It’s said that former U.S. President Bill Clinton dined here during his visit to Geneva in the 1990s. We opted for the porcini mushroom cheese fondue (Fondue aux bolets), which comes with a whole loaf of bread and boiled potatoes. Although the accompaniments are simple, the rich cheese more than makes up for it. The waiter even gave us a demonstration on how to enjoy the fondue: spear a piece of bread with a fork and stir it vigorously in the pot until it’s fully coated with cheese (he really emphasized the vigorous stirring). He also mentioned that if you accidentally drop your bread into the pot, you’re supposed to treat everyone to the meal—fortunately, we all managed to avoid that consequence! We also ordered the beef tartare (Tartare de boeuf), which was served in generous portions with fresh meat. Personally, I enjoyed using the toasted bread that came with the tartare to dip into the cheese fondue, finding it more texturally satisfying than the traditional fresh bread. While I wouldn’t want to eat cheese fondue every day, experiencing Swiss culture in such an atmospheric restaurant was truly a special occasion.
