The World Heritage Site: Naples' Castel Nuovo 🏰
Castel Nuovo, also known as Maschio Angioino, is located in the heart of the historic center of Naples, southern Italy, close to the Mediterranean coast. It is one of the city's most iconic medieval buildings, mentioned by the British poet Lord Byron in his poetry. ✍️ The origins of Castel Nuovo date back to 1279 when Charles I of the Angevin dynasty ordered its construction to replace the old castle as a royal residence and defensive fortress. During the construction of the castle, it is said that workers discovered a giant egg while digging the foundation, which was believed to support the fortune of Naples. If the egg were to break, the city would face misfortune. Therefore, the egg was moved to the harbor near the Egg Tower and later transferred to the present Castel dell'Ovo. The castle underwent several expansions and transformations, the most significant of which occurred during the Aragonese dynasty, when the grand white stone entrance—Porta Nuova—was added, carved with the symbols of the Aragonese family and historical scenes. Inside the castle, there are five towers, the largest being Torre dell'Ovo, and a Gothic-style hall—Barons' Hall—where royal celebrations and parliamentary meetings were once held. 🚗 Piazza Municipio is very well connected. Visitors can reach it directly by metro (Line 1, Municipio station), and multiple bus routes are also available. Walking is an ideal way to explore the castle and its surroundings. Visitors can climb to the top of the Egg Tower for a panoramic view of Naples and visit the Civic Museum within the castle to learn about the history and art of Naples. It is recommended to join a guided tour to learn more about the stories and details behind the castle. 👀 Surrounding Areas: Pompeii: About 24 kilometers from Castel Nuovo, this Roman city buried by the ashes of Mount Vesuvius is an invaluable archaeological treasure. Island of Capri: A 50-minute boat ride from the Port of Naples, famous for its Blue Grotto and enchanting natural scenery. Mount Vesuvius: A half-hour drive or guided tour away, visitors can climb to the edge of the volcanic crater to experience the awe-inspiring volcanic landscape. #Italy #GreatPlacesInItaly #ItalianLandscapes #Naples #PlacesYouHaveToVisitOnceInALifetime
