Tokyo Church Architecture Pilgrimage (2)๐
The Greek cross plan, the thick pure white stone walls with arched windows, and the large onion dome supported by a ring of vaults and covered in copper plates all highlight the Byzantine style. Additionally, Conder added many British Romanesque and Renaissance decorations, making the 800-square-meter, 35-meter-tall Nikolai Cathedral both spectacular and exquisiteโa landmark of Orthodox architecture. ๐ Tokyo Resurrection Cathedral is not only the headquarters of the Japanese Orthodox Church but also designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. During the Great Kanto Earthquake, the dome of the cathedral was severely damaged, but it was restored in the early Showa period and underwent a comprehensive restoration project in the 1990s. ๐๐ The cathedral is open for visits, with a suggested donation of 300 yen to support its maintenance and cultural activities. ๐ Address: 4-1 Surugadai, Kanda, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, a 2-minute walk from Ochanomizu Station. ๐ Visiting Hours: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. (April 1 to September 30), 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. (October 1 to March 31).
