Tokyo Exhibition | Koji Namikawa "Sentient" (2)๐ŸŽจ

This exhibition is composed of about 20 sculptures, each independently placed on pedestals and weaving a multilayered dialogue. ๐Ÿƒ๐ŸŒธ Cathode-ray tube TVs from the 1970s, decorative horses for Boys' Day celebrations, plaster casts of Greek sculptures for sketchingโ€” These objects, used as sculptural materials and placed side by side, seem to have been "fished out from the net of changing times" (in Namikawa's words), each shaping aesthetic concepts of different eras and regions. ๐ŸŒฟ ๐Ÿƒ๐ŸŒธ The objects are not limited to still life but also include continuously burning candles and ikebana arrangements that are changed weekly during the exhibition. The range is wide, encompassing mass-produced symbols of the times and meticulously crafted styles by individual hands. ๐ŸŒธ ๐Ÿƒ๐ŸŒธ The surfaces of the works employ Namikawa's signature techniques from his previous sculptural series, such as "Velvet," which features moss or mycelium-like fuzz, and "Trans," which is carved based on digital data obtained from 3D scanning. ๐Ÿƒ๐ŸŒธ These techniques destabilize the meaning of the objects and shake the readability of their symbolic nature. #Tokyo ๐ŸŒŸ
