π UCL's Grant Museum of Zoology Reopens!
π The Grant Museum of Zoology closed its doors in March 2023 and after nearly a year of renovations, it's back and better than ever! π The museum houses around 68,000 zoological specimens, including the world's rarest Quaggas skeleton; milk wolf specimens; Dodo bird bones, and an exquisite model collection, including Blaschka glass models, Ziegler wax models, and Vernon-Edwards extinct fish models. π The museum also boasts collections from Thomas Henry Huxley, Karl Pearson, Victor Negus, and Doris McKinnon, as well as materials from the Discovery Expedition and the Challenger Expedition. π Established in 1828 for UCL students, the museum first opened to the public in 1996. It aims to use its collections for teaching, and artists and researchers can also access these collections. The Grant Museum hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including special exhibitions, related learning activities, and family events. π The Grant Museum of Zoology was founded in 1827 by Robert Edmond Grant (1793-1874) as a teaching collection for the newly established University of London, which later became University College London. π Upon his death, Grant left his library and a collection of 10,000 specimens to the college. Over the years, the museum's curators have included many great zoologists, embryologists, and paleontologists, including Edwin Ray Lankester, J. P. Hill, and D. M. S. Watson. #UK #London #Museum #UK #London #Museum
