USA Independent Travel Transportation Guide 🚗✈️

I recently spent two weeks traveling in the US, and my choice of transportation within the country was a mix of flights, chartered cars, and rental cars. My itinerary included a road trip in the American West, plus a trip to New Mexico to visit Breaking Bad filming locations. Since long drives can be tiring, I opted for two segments of rental cars and two domestic flights to balance convenience and comfort. Next, I’ll share my tips for chartered cars and rental cars—super useful for planning your own US trip! 1. Chartered Cars (Private Driver Service) We flew from China to Los Angeles (LA), spent two days there, then flew to Albuquerque. Renting a car in this scenario would’ve been a hassle—plus, many attractions in LA have terrible parking. So we chose a chartered car right after landing. We booked through Little Angel Travel Service (Xiaotianshi Chuxing). Including the driver’s tip, a 10-hour chartered car cost around 2,100 RMB (≈300 USD). 💡 Who Should Choose a Chartered Car? If you can’t drive, If your trip is short and renting a car feels too troublesome, If you’re visiting attractions with poor/confusing parking. While chartered cars are more expensive than rental cars, they save you tons of hassle at tricky spots. For example: When visiting the Hollywood Sign, many mountain areas have no-parking zones. If you don’t know the rules, you could get a $100+ ticket! With a chartered car, you avoid this worry entirely. My advice: If you book a chartered car, hit all the hard-to-park attractions in one go—maximize the value! 🎬🚫🚗 2. Rental Cars I split my rental car use into two segments: Segment 1: 3 days in Albuquerque Segment 2: 8 days in the American West Both were booked with Hertz. 1️⃣ Albuquerque Rental (3 Days) Since we planned to visit Breaking Bad spots and the Navajo Reservation (where roads might be rough), we rented a 4WD Jeep Wrangler. Hertz gave us a brand-new car—only 4,000 miles on it! 🚙💨 My Actual Driving Experience: If you’re a Breaking Bad fan coming to check in at these spots, a regular sedan would work perfectly fine. The actual roads—even on the reservation—are in great condition, super easy to drive. 2️⃣ American West Rental (8 Days) Pick-up: Las Vegas Destinations: Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, Sequoia National Park Drop-off: Los Angeles We reserved a Volvo XC40 (or similar), but Hertz upgraded us to a 2025 Buick Envision with less than 1,000 miles—so new! The in-car system even had built-in data and satellite navigation—no need for CarPlay to get directions. The best feature? The navigation alerts you in advance if there are police ahead. This is a GAME-CHANGER in the American West! Anyone who’s driven to Antelope Canyon knows there are tons of cops checking for speeding—get caught, and you’ll face a sky-high ticket ($200+ easily). If you’re worried about this, I highly recommend renting with Hertz—new cars, smart in-car tech, zero stress. 🚨💨 Bonus: Gas Tips ⛽️ Driving from New Mexico to California, we noticed a huge gap in gas prices: Cheapest: New Mexico (≈$3/gallon) Most Expensive: On the Nevada-California border (≈$6/gallon—yikes!) Note: Some gas stations don’t accept Chinese Visa cards. Always carry cash ($20–$50) as a backup! Total gas cost for all rental car days: $357.85 Total Transportation Cost 1 day of chartered car + 11 days of rental cars (including gas) = 11,880 RMB (≈1,650 USD) #AmericanWestRoadTrip #HertzRental #USRoadTrip #AlbuquerqueTravel #BreakingBadSpots
