Commissioned in 1943, it first saw action in World War II, where it was hit by a torpedo once and endured five kamikaze attacks. 🎢🍃 It later served in the Cold War and the Vietnam War, and was even requisitioned by NASA in the 1960s. Over 50,000 personnel served on board, with over 270 making the ultimate sacrifice. The ship was decommissioned in 1974. 🚢 ✅️The carrier and its aircraft.
