Over the years, we have bought many bottles of Gran El Enemigo from our local Mövenpick wine-shop in Zürich, Switzerland. We enjoyed every bottle and we expected the visit to the Winery in Maipu to be the highlight of our first visit to Mendoza. Unfortunately it was not to be :-( ! In fact, it was the very worst experience we had of our visits to 9 wineries in Mendoza in April 2022. And the only one, we will certainly never repeat or recommend. We arrived on time in the morning of 4/25/22 only to be asked to wait for our English guide to meet us. The winery had just opened, we were booked for the first tour. After about 15 minutes of waiting, we were finally picked up by our guide. To our surprise - and contrary to all other tours that we took during our stay in Mendoza -, he told us that we would do a tasting first and the tour of the facilities afterwards. We were made to join a Spanish speaking group in a cellar room. Our guide accompanied us and sat next to us at the table. To our astonishment we were first made to take an olive-oil-tasting during which we were confronted with a printed menu showing different choices of wine-tasting levels - without an prices stated! We opted for the 3 Gran Enemigo wines, the second highest on the list. Meanwhile the Spanish-speaking guide was explaining wine-growing and -making in a torrent of words to the other participants. Our English-speaking guide translated 5% for us at best. When presented, the wines were poured all at once into the glasses which were provided with small labels showing the different locations of the vineyards used. Neither spit tanks nor water were ever offered to or any of the other guests! While the Spanish guide was explaining the various locations of the vineyards, the geography and geology of the Mendoza wine regions (Maipu, Uco-valley, Luján de Cuyo, etc.), we got very limited information from our English guide. In short, we suffered through the Spanish sales presentation for almost an hour. Then we were escorted to the wine-shop by our English-speaking guide and he left saying that "after a while" we would be picked up from the wine-shop for the tour of the facilities. We had already overextended our scheduled time due to the delays and drawn-out explanations from the Spanish guide. After another unattended 10 to 15 minutes hanging around in the shop, we reluctantly decided to skip the tour, pay our expenses and leave for the next winery. Upon presentation of the bill for the tasting of 3 wines, I almost fainted. For the 18200 pesos (that's 3000 plus pesos for every puddle of wine) we could have bought 2 bottles of Gran Enemigo at their shop and have money left over for a bottle of medium range wine to do our own private tasting in the comfort of our hotel room or balcony. At no other winery that we visited were the tastings that expensive. Even with a full lunch at the wineries including unlimited amounts of wine we never spent this much at any other winery. The price is completely out of line and in absolutely no way justified. We felt robbed. Our driver was aghast when I showed him the invoice. He mentioned that this tasting was about as expensive as the complete one-day-tour that he was driving us and that this amount would feed him and his family of four for more than a week. Did I mention that the prices for a bottle of Gran Enemigo at the Casa Vigil winery store are about 20% higher than for the same bottle at home in Switzerland? Sadly, because of our late arrival at the next winery on our schedule, we missed their tour. So El Enemigo also stole us this. El Enemigo saw no reason for an explanation or to get back to us about our experience at Casa Vigil when contacted by the concierge or our hotel who had planned the tour for us. We will never in our remaining life buy another bottle from El Enemigo or, as a matter of fact, from the Zapata Group. But we will relate the sad story of our experience to all our friends, family, patients and...

Outside: -5/10 Inside the restaurant: 15/10

Outside review: We arrived at 11:20am for our 11:30am reservation. We were told to take a seat outside and wine would be served to us while we waited…sounds lovely. However 30 minutes later, no wine, no tour, no communication. 45 minutes later…still nothing. 1 hour later we hunted down the hostess to tell her we had a 3:30pm reservation 45 minutes away and we were now concerned we would be late for it as we didn’t want to rush a Michelin star lunch. She said she would tell the restaurant of our timing needs and sat us at the restaurant with no tour. We still don’t know what happened and why we waited for an hour in the cold…

Inside (restaurant) review: Literally the opposite of outside. WOW WOW WOW. The food!! The service!!! Leo is the king. His hospitality is genuinely unmatched. He went above and beyond so many times.

I unfortunately missed the Som’s name but he might be my favorite som I’ve encountered in life so far- so knowledgeable, so approachable, soooo good at describing wines visually and verbally. And his energy is muy muy tranquilo in the best way.

I’m not a big flesh person in general but the rib was EXQUISITE. Leo also brought us a little side of the pasta which was delectable as well. And the deserts were the icing on the proverbial cake. 10/10 for food, 20/10 for service.

One more note against the host — she said she would let the restaurant know we were on a tight timeline (that she made tight, not us 🙄) and she didn’t. We let Leo know and he moved heaven and earth to get us our desserts and check in time to not be too late, but I know he would have timed us perfectly if she told him like she said she would. She did him and us a disservice.

Also, nothing was ever said about the missed tour or the hour-long wait to be seated, but holy smokes did the restaurant work to turn our experience around. They deserve all of the stars. Now if only they could train the staff outside to be at their level…

TLDR: We were there 3.5 hours and they had to RUSH our dessert because the hostess didn’t do her job. For an expensive meal (that was incredible), it’s rather inexcusable.

I will update this review if they reach...

Outstanding experience. We had the 7 course menu with wine pairing. Got there early for an 830 seating - they were giving out free glasses of their wine to everyone. Then they offered a free tour - so both a lovely surprise. Venue is beautiful. Our sommelier (Paula) was awesome. Great personality, very knowledgeable, friendly, - excellent Food was delicious! And trust me when I say this. It's nice to find a place in Argentina that focuses on quality over quantity. And they served our filet steak course med-rare so not like the rest of Argentina which comes at you well-done by default Wine pairings were excellent - and you can have as much as you want! - basically unlimited. And some of the courses had a choice of wine - which you could then also try so more like 9 wines :) For transparency - they did run out of the final wine (the sparkling wine) for dessert (but they had an alternative "party wine") And the service by the end was a little less attentive / slower (had to ask them to serve us courses 6/7) And it was getting a little chilly (we were sat outside) and they only seem to have enough blankets for 5/6 people Despite the above - what an exceptional and enjoyable evening. Will recommend for a long time to come as the must do for a nice dinner in Mendoza. N.b. with the blue currency rate dinner was ~$80/£65 per person Tips / to note Book early! I.e. week+before - It fills up / is very popular For dinner. Later the better - first seating was around 8pm (even though they apparently have availability earlier) Dinner took us...
