We decided to do one last short venture from Buenos Aires before heading back to the U.S. We had already visited Colonia, which we loved, and Dos Hermanos Estancia, which was the highlight of our trip, so we were looking for something close yet different. I checked out places around Tigre that would give us the feel of the Delta area and I came across the Alpenhaus which had excellent reviews but nothing recent so I did wonder. Suzanne replied to my email immediately and we set up a one night stay midweek. Catching the train from Retiro train station was "a piece of cake" , We asked our cab driver to drop us in front of the train to Tigre. then just entered the station and followed the signs onto the platform that said Tigre using our Sube cards to go through the turnstiles. The trains run every 15 minutes and they are clean and comfortable. At the Tigre end we walked to the right around the traffic circle to the McDonalds and just behind it to the ticket office for the launch for Rama Negra. We wanted the 10 am launch as it drops you right at the front dock to the Guesthaus. The launch ride was worth every penny, my husband worked the jungle ride at Disneyland and thought this looked like the real version of that without the hippos. When we arrived Suzanne greeted us at the dock and led us up to register and, our tradition, to have a good German beer (on draft). We spent the day enjoying the beautiful grounds and walking the footpaths that line the channels admiring the summer homes and the wonderful trees, plants, birds and friendly neighbors. Our room was transplanted from the Black Forest, very comfortable complete with a flat screen TV. We ate both lunch (Hunters stew) and dinner (Goulash) at the small restaurant that's attached to the main house and really enjoyed it. Breakfast was served out on the deck overlooking the water and pleasant. This is a family run operation and it's easy to tell that it is a labor of love. || ||The return the next mid morning was just as easy. We exited the train one station before the Retiro station as it was smaller and just as close to Recoleta/ Barrio Norte area where we were staying. Walked off the platform out to the street and caught a radio taxi back to our apartment. All in all it was a...

Read moreA true gem in the Delta, this Austrian-themed "gasthaus" is perfect to relax in the middle of the nature and enjoy the pool, rent a kayak to explore the river, take a stroll to the pond of their private natural reserve, or explore the islands by foot following the footpath into the woods.
There are cabins and bungalows for rent with different price points -- the bungalows are bigger and have their own kitchen where you can cook your own food, whereas the cabins are meant just to sleep. The cabin price was cheaper during the week, and it included a generous breakfast consisting of cheese, ham, bread, butter, medialunas, two artesanal jams made by Mrs. Suzanne herself, a glass of orange juice, plus coffee and milk, served at the covered deck by the river. It was a lovely breakfast and a relaxing start of the day! We felt so pampered.
As a restaurant, they serve typical German food, all cooked by Mrs. Suzanne. Lunch and dinner are optional for cabin guests and are charged separately. Beers on tap and bottled are also available. The menu caters German food, pasta and also some vegetarian options. The host is very attentive and she can accommodate your dietary restrictions if informed in advance.
Alpenhaus also works as a restaurant at lunch time only (11AM to 5PM, booking required on weekdays, open all year long), however the pool is accessible only to guests spending the night.
Public transport (lancha colectiva) leaves at 10 AM from the Estación Fluvial Tigre and arrives right at the Alpenhaus' deck in 45'. Check-in at Alpenhaus is at 11 AM, so it works like a clockwork!
To go back to mainland Tigre, the lancha colectiva leaves at 11.30 AM from a different deck which is accessible in 10' by foot, so there is plenty of time to have breakfast, check out and take the boat back. The ride costs less than a dollar each way. Please note that the footpath to the other deck is into the wood, so avoid trolleys with wheels.
We stayed during the week in February, so the boat schedule may differ during the weekend or other times of the year.
We loved the whole experience from start to finish! Vielen Dank Frau Suzanne und...
