We were so excited to have booked at the Star of Greece, but the experience did not live up to our expectations. Firstly they got my partners name wrong on the booking and booked a lunch time for us but he requested a dinner booking. We only found this out when he rang to check on the time of the booking the day before, he said his name which they could not find then eventually found that it had been spelt incorrectly so they could not find his name, then they said that it was at lunchtime the booking. My partner went on to say he booked a month ago and it was for dinner not lunch, the person on the end of the phone changed the booking from lunchtime to 8.30pm. We arrived around 8.05pm there were plenty of tables and we were able to sit out on the balcony, make no mistake here the view is beautiful but the restaurant itself the tables and general atmosphere is pretty basic. Food: They have a set menu in the weekends, so we ordered two courses which is $75 each, we both ordered one entree and one main, He the squid and me the tuna ceviche and we both ordered wagu beef for main. We were also told that we would need to order a side at an extra cost of $16 dollars, I was not happy about this as if its a set menu then sides should be included! To be honest thinking about this a plate of meat with some sauce cost us $50 for the plate, and that would make the entree $25 so not really value for money. The food arrived Squid was not that great and could have got this from a takeaway, the tuna ceviche had a lot of melon mixed with it and was tiny little chunks of Tuna not value for money at all and was OK. The beef was lovely but not really sure it was Wagu! but when you consider it was $50 for each of those beef dishes once again not value for money! The side was very average Kale and some Broccolini mixed with couscous. We did not eat it. Service: good service nice enough waiting staff but I thought this was fine dining! the staff were definitely not dressed for fine dining one of them had Burkenstock sandals on and most had casual clothes such as shorts. When paying we said that the side was not up to scratch they took $8 off the side price of $16. All in all the cost of the meal was over $200 with a bottle of $50 wine. Once again not really up to scratch and food was OK not outstanding...
Read moreThis is not a Greek restaurant. I know. For a second I felt stupid for thinking I was going to see a Greek menu but it is called The Star of Greece, so maybe not that surprising? Nice food but nothing at all unusual; the squid with Thai salad was quite satisfactory. The bread was $3.00 pp, but was one slice of very soft fluffy bread, which sounds better than it is, was similar but nowhere near as good as Embla in Melbourne. I was imagining that we’d get a sourdough. The butter was really hard, so impossible to spread. My friend had the whiting; it was a huge plate of food. Looked good. Loved the chocolate torte- we shared that between 3 but for $18.00 the chocolate ice cream was larger than the piece of cake. However, there were a couple of delicious details along with the cake. But the reason I left off stars from the Star was because we were seated in a small room with two large tables of screeching, shrieking women. All 24 of them. One might have been a birthday lunch. They were having a great time, but were so loud that even the wait staff winced. They were so loud the three of us had to huddle in close to hear each other talk. They were so loud that the sea gulls flew south. For this reason I would not ever sit inside this restaurant. On a sunny warm day the tables outside would be the way to go. We asked for a different table but the place was fully booked, so we were stuck. We were also told that really, when it comes to the noise levels, it doesn’t matter where you sit, it doesn’t get better. This tells me that the noise issue has been noted many times and ignored. I didn’t check the ceiling but there are soundproofing bats that can be placed on the ceiling to calm the acoustics. Something needs to be done. The noise was just overwhelming which is not what a restaurant in a spectacular location like this, wants to be remembered for. Thanks,...
Read moreReally sad to not be able to rave about this restaurant that I have previously loved. The service and food offering was very different from the last time I was here.
On arrival the waiter responded to me asking how his day was with "oh I just rolled out of bed and had a shower and got here".
I requested assistance with my dietary requirement, as the menu has no hints - to be presented with a complicated spreadsheet of ticks and crosses where I was left to find something to eat by myself. Really not a great sign where there is a "GFO" marked for a dish - only to find out that option is to remove the gluten from the dish and not replace it with anything else. So it's really a take it or leave it approach from the chef. Which is fine - but that is better communicated on the website or booking and then you can make a choice if it's for you or not ahead of schedule.
My partners starter arrived a good 5 minutes before mine, and when mine did arrive, so too did my entree all at the same time. When I asked the waitress to ensure that my main wasn't fired until I was finished - she told me the chef always sends the "bites" at the same time as the entree - regardless of food sitting going cold on the table - and there is "a time limit on the table you know".... that was extremely surprising to be told that way.
You can't beat the view, but given the lack of assistance or care with the dietary requirement and timings on the pass of the ticket itself, I was really disappointed. And don't worry - we got up and vacated the table right at 2pm so we didn't exceed that time limit - pity as then there were no extra purchases of wine, extra desserts or drinks - but we got the feeling they didn't care about that either.
I'm happy to read everyone else's reviews that is was amazing, its sad when you have waited for your reservation and left so...
