Nestled in the scenic embrace of Hahndorf, The Lane Vineyard offers a dining experience as thoughtful as it is transportive. The journey begins, however, on a decidedly rustic note: a dirt road leading to the venue suggests charm. Parking, too, feels more functional. Inside, the space opens to sweeping views of the vineyard—an unspoken assurance that one is, at last, in capable hands.
The soundtrack to this culinary pilgrimage, however, is an odd discord. The music—a playlist that seems better suited to a bike sprint than a languid degustation—threatens to unravel the sense of pace. Slow down, one wants to tell it. Let us savor the moment.
But once the plates begin to arrive, such distractions recede into irrelevance. The seafood courses, in particular, are revelations. Smoky oysters, kissed with lime, evoke ancient shorelines where fire met brine. The tuna and red snapper, paired with vegetables so subtly rendered they seem to hover on the plate, are exercises in culinary restraint, each bite a masterclass in balance and clarity. Here, precision reigns. Even the dissonant soundtrack begins to feel oddly complementary, a counterpoint to the serene artistry of the dishes.
The meat courses deepen the narrative. A lamb dish, accompanied by a tomato paste of profound earthy complexity, is both humble and elegant, a testament to the kitchen’s grasp of flavor at its most elemental. The black angus beef sausage, meanwhile, is a nod to the Germanic roots of the region. Served with cabbage, it sidesteps the pitfalls of kitsch and fast-food nostalgia, delivering instead a dish that honors tradition without being shackled to it. Cabbage, here, transcends its role as mere accompaniment, becoming a canvas for flavors that are at once bold and nuanced.
The meal crescendos with a pairing of pavlova and a glass of Gathering Noble Semillon, the former adorned with fruit so vibrant it seems almost surreal. The sweetness is measured, the textures pristine, the harmony unmistakable. A final course of fruit, cheese, and sparkling wine to take home feels like an encore—an invitation to continue the experience long after leaving the vineyard.
The Lane Vineyard’s menu evolves with the seasons, a reflection of its earnest commitment to ingredient-driven cuisine. The team is on the cusp of realizing a true farm-to-table ethos, and while not entirely there yet, their dedication is palpable. There is an alchemy at work in this kitchen—a synergy of butter, smoke, and produce that transforms the ordinary into something approaching the sublime.
Ultimately, The Lane Vineyard exemplifies what the Adelaide Hills do best: a reverence for the land, a willingness to innovate, and a quiet confidence in letting the ingredients speak for themselves. It is a place where ambition is tempered by humility, and where the distance between the soil and the plate feels...
Read moreWe booked ahead based on the number of positive reviews on T/A and are so glad that we did. This was definitely the highlight of our recent trip to South Australia.
The winery is located in the picturesque rolling hills outside Hahndorf. Whilst there is an open deck outside the restaurant due to the cold weather all the dining was inside, which was nice and warm. Our table whilst not next to the window still allowed us to soak in the great views of the valley outside.
As I was the designated driver, we choose to forego the wine tasting and head straight to the dining experience. We did note a number of visitors being turned away as they didn't have a prior booking - I think that they were expecting cellar door sales.
The staff were very attentive and explained every dish on the Provenance Menu. They also made sure that we were provided with drinks, a glass of the Shiraz for me and plenty of sparkling water. Though they did have a non-alcoholic pairing option. It was a five-course set menu, which actually felt like we had more dishes than that. The house sourdough bread and garlic butter was a surprising delight - something so simple but delicious. The first course was a selection of entrees, with aged beef tartare, duck ham (apparently there is such a thing), mushroom, cheese & truffle tarts - visually and gastronomically perfect. The second course, kin tuna, confit chicken wing and chestnut soubise was good but the jus that came with it was amazing - so complex. Our third course of venison, roasted mushroom, and pickled cabbage was delicious though the peppercorn sauce was just a little bit sweeter than I would have liked - though it didn't discourage me from leaving a clean plate. Our palate cleanser of a Chardonay sorbet, with apple, grape and caramel would have been perfect without the drizzle of caramel. However, in saying that it was refreshing and suited the break between dishes. Now I'm not a big on sweet deserts and our wait staff sensing this when we were ordering advised that I could swap that out for the cheese board, which brought a satisfied smile to my face. My wife felt that the desert was as coherent as the other dishes and enjoyed sharing my cheese board with me.
The cost of the entire meal was almost $200/head but in my opinion the whole experience, the food, wine, service and ambience of the restaurant was value for money. I really could not fault anything with our lunch, the quality, flavour, quantity and service was impressive. To top it all off when we leaving a rainbow appeared in the paddock across from the restaurant, truly we had found our pot of gold at the...
