I enjoy hiking the various tracks through Cleland National Park that lead to Mt Lofty Summit. Occasionally I, or the group I'm with, will have a snack or a meal at the cafe when we reach the top. The best thing about this is quite simply the view, also, for us it's probably also the sense of achievement at having enjoyed the hike. So, what's it like?

The restaurant & cafe cater to a variety of people - including tourists, those out for a special day, or groups of sweaty hikers or runners. All of whom will sit at nearby tables. This is a place that you decide on what you'd like to eat, head to the counter, order & pay, then take a buzzer & go back to your table & wait for it to sound. If you're having a meal & are inside, then they'll bring the food (except cakes) to your table (so you quote your table number). Otherwise, you'll go to the counter & negotiate the way back to your table with the drinks & food yourself.

Seating can be competitive, and there are some pockets of tables that are downright unpleasant on windy & cold days due to the way that the doors open. The tables & chairs themselves are fine, however it's tricky to negotiate disabled & pram access given that the tables are right at the doorways.

The service is 'ok'. The last time I was there (December 2012), I ordered three cakes & drinks for myself & family, & it took the same number of staff to enter the order into their machine. They were training a new staff member (it was a Sunday, about midday), so I understand it can take a while to get the hang of it, though we thought it was excessive when I had to ask over and over again to repeat & correct the order. The tables weren't wiped clean - there were rings from drinks & crumbs (even crusts!) left on most of the tables.

When we had breakfast the weekend before, we had to ask for butter for the toast, as well as napkins, and get back up to get spoons for our coffee. I suppose we should have realised, that this sort of thing is perhaps becoming modern, but the it's pretty pricey & I'd have thought they'd just do that for us.

Yes, it is expensive. Not completely insane - our 2 coffees, milkshake & 3 cakes cost just under $40. The plate I had my cake on had something a bit sticky looking on it, but I couldn't be bothered going back because of what we had to endure in simply ordering it. If you look closely at the picture, you can see what I mean - and note the 'hard' poached eggs. The breakfast we had - 2 serves of pancakes, 1 'summit' breakfast, 1 eggs on toast, 2 milkshakes & 2 coffees - cost just under $90. There was nothing special about it (remember, we had to ask for butter for the toast), and the pancake serves really were small. Given what we'd already paid, I'd have paid a few dollars more to have either full table service, or an extra pancake, plus the butter without having to ask.

This is a place that you will pay to sit & have something to eat, and enjoy being in the environment at Mt Lofty - you're not paying for the service or cleanliness of tables. The cake cabinet is really one of the best of all tourist areas in Adelaide - there's cakes, muffins, biscuits, fudge, and there's also an icecream freezer with paddle...

Very poor customer service! We’ve been there after the long hiking from Waterfall gully, super thirsty and hungry. As our husbands and kids were going to join us, we booked a table while waiting for them. We’ve been told that we can’t wait there and eat nothing for 20 minutes. Then one of us decided to order a juice. My husband and my kid came in less than 15 minutes while we were waiting for the rest. I Offered my kid some dried sultanas that brought from home and asked others if they want to have some while waiting. Then a lady from the cafe came to us with a very rude manners and attitude warned us that we can not eat our food! I wouldn’t feed my 20 months baby with my restaurant food! I asked to see the manager to discuss the issue with him. Unfortunately, his behaviour was really bad too. While I assured him that we’re there to have our breakfast and definitely will spent some money there, he tried hard to not apologies for his and his staff member’s poor attitude. Really not recommend this place. Not a place to relax and enjoy your day. As you have to just concentrate on spending money before being kicked out the place! And yes we ordered food for 6 people eventually -as planned- as there is no other place to eat on the summit!

HELLO AGAIN!

Here is my response to some of the 'wrong claims' you made on your response which again shows the culture in your business: You mentioned children's' food is ok to be brought to the tables to me and my husband if the adults order. I would love to watch your CCTV recordings to see the 'eggs'. What we had for the kids were just snacks and fruits. They had their breakfast heaps earlier, and it was too soon for their lunch. I hope your CCTVs records the time as well. You DID NOT apologise for your staff's rude behaviour which I think was a standard in your business. You actually did your best not to apologise. You only mentioned you'll talk to her after I insisted on my claim. I am not sure you did that, though, remembering her smile after you had a chat with her. I hope your CCTVs are able to record sound as well. Your staff's comment on bringing food to the table was not concerned with COVID AT ALL. She mentioned a number of times that we need to buy food. She actually started with Kid's food and then changed the conversation when we said we only give homemade food to our kids and said adults couldn't have their food (we only had a few sultanas). I doubt she was concerned with our health. Only after you mentioned kids food is alright to be taken to the table, they had some fruits, packed yoghurt and cheese (which are not categorised as food). Go and read Agnieszka's comment, which reflects on your same behaviour. You comment on what we ordered was rather ridiculous. We ordered FOOD from your menu. Some of us wanted to have cheese and ham croissant for their Sunday brunch, and interestingly it is none of your business. Go and revisit some of the principles of hospitality.

In the end, I think telling lies on what happened is not a solution for you. Say you are genuinely sorry and review your culture and values....

A Stunning Wedding Venue: Where Every Detail Shone Bright

Atop the glorious Mount Lofty, our wedding day at The Summit Function Centre was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment we stepped onto the grounds, we were enveloped in an atmosphere of elegance and warmth that set the perfect tone for our celebration.

The highlight of our experience was undoubtedly the exquisite food. Every dish served at our reception was a masterpiece, crafted with precision and bursting with flavour. The culinary team at The Summit Function Centre surpassed all expectations, accommodating dietary restrictions with ease and ensuring that each guest enjoyed a memorable dining experience.

The staff at The Summit Function Centre were an absolute joy to work with. From our initial inquiries to the final farewell, they demonstrated unparalleled professionalism and genuine care. Andrew and Tony anticipated our needs before we even knew them, and their attention to detail ensured that everything ran seamlessly. They truly bent over backwards to make our day as special and stress-free as possible.

Not only did the service excel, but the venue itself was a sight to behold. The breathtaking view served as a stunning backdrop for our ceremony, creating a picturesque setting that enhanced every moment captured in our photos. The way the venue was set up for our wedding was equally impressive, with our guests commenting on elements such as the beautiful chandelier and ceiling draping to the lavishly set tables. The full-length glass windows made the city skyline a stunning backdrop while we dined and created a romantic ambience.

Choosing The Summit Function Centre for our wedding was one of the best decisions we made. The combination of outstanding food, brilliant staff, and an unparalleled setting made our day truly magical. We cannot recommend this venue highly enough for anyone seeking a wedding experience that exceeds all...

The Summit Cafe and Function Centre offers a delightful experience, perched atop Mount Lofty with breathtaking panoramic views of Adelaide. Whether you're after a casual coffee and cake or a venue for a special event, it appears to cater to a range of needs. Many reviewers rave about the stunning location, highlighting the "magical" atmosphere and incredible backdrop for weddings and other functions. The floor-to-ceiling windows in the function room seem to maximize the impact of the city and coastal views, creating a memorable setting both day and night. The service appears to be a standout, with numerous mentions of friendly, professional, and attentive staff who go above and beyond to ensure a seamless experience. Guests have appreciated the efficient communication during the planning stages of events and the willingness to accommodate specific needs. Food quality also receives positive feedback, with descriptions of delicious, well-presented modern Australian cuisine using local produce. The cafe offers lighter bites, while the restaurant provides an upscale dining experience. Their cakes and coffees also seem to be a hit. For those considering it as a function venue, The Summit appears flexible, offering customizable packages for weddings and other events. They can cater to both intimate gatherings and larger cocktail-style receptions. Even with its popularity as a tourist destination, the function centre ensures dedicated spaces for events, providing a sense of exclusivity. Overall, The Summit Cafe and Function Centre seems to be a well-regarded establishment that leverages its spectacular location with excellent service and quality food, making it a strong contender for both casual visits and special occasions.

We booked Mt Lofty Summit Cafe, recently, for a private function, to celebrate a significant birthday. It was an intimate affair for 21 people, including 3 children. A number of our guests were flying in from interstate, and we wanted to showcase Adelaide’s finest. We asked Andrew, the Manager, if he’d consider coordinating a unique degustation menu. The Cafe hadn’t done this before, so Andrew used his expert knowledge and worked with, who we now consider to be a very talented chef, to develop a 5-course degustation menu, using only locally sourced produce, along with wine pairings from the local region. Andrew stayed in touch, every step of the way and the menu was set! We arrived to bubbles and canapĆ©s, a lovely welcoming atmosphere, and a superb view out over Adelaide. We were seated for the various courses. Ethan, our waiter, along with manager Andrew, took care of us all, for the entire evening. The service was superb! They were serving food, topping up drinks, keeping an eye on our and the kids’ needs, changing cutlery, picking up napkins… everything was perfect. The chefs’ hard work paid off. Food presentation was beautiful, portions were generous, the mix of colours and flavours were inspirational. We couldn’t have asked for a better venue, and evening. Everyone was so complementary and our birthday boy was grinning from ear to ear, to not only have his nearest and dearest celebrate his milestone, but also to experience the best that Adelaide has to offer. We highly recommend engaging with Andrew and the team, at Mt Lofty Summit Cafe, and doing something a little different, for an intimate gathering.
