Raced to the pub as they said the kitchen was closing early, ok it got busy, took an hour to get meals but why did the four behind us get their meals before us. Was treating my mate to a steak, ordered a scotch fillet at $38 with veggies and mash, see photo for what we got. To be honest it looked like a sandwich steak, not the steakette, but it was thin and drawn apart with a big line of fat in the middle (see other photo for comparison) I asked a staff member to check for us, the manager was called who tried to argue that he had the same steak and it was scotch, and when I said it was so thin he argued about my photo. He made me so uncomfortable as a patron I am compelled to write this review and the attitude being the manager of the establishment instead of arguing in my face and demanding I accept his point of view, we had no choice than to leave the establishment and forfeit our desert that was paid for. Overall approximately around $150 spent and we are escorted from the premises with very disturbing comments from the manager, all for voicing that we didn't believe we got the correct meal. My meal originally came as lamb cutlets but I ordered beef schnitzel. Over a very underwhelming meal and a sour taste to our visit, I will never go back and I advise other to avoid this...
Read moreThis was a quiet pub/hotel... all the more because of Covid19. The patrons were easy going and the staff were very nice. You get the feel of a genuine country local pub, which was nice. They have the one bar which services the front bar, dining area and poker machine area. There is also TAB fafilities. It's a bit of an Historical Hotel for the area and looks like it's been around for a long while. A part of the hotel that I liked was the dining area with it having large stained glass windows which gives the place an authentic look and feel to it. Also in the dining area there is an antique cash register, which I gathered was not in use, more for historical decor. Didn't see the rooms upstairs where there is accommodation, although I assume that they may be basic and adequate. They had some pamphets on the bar saying that the establishment can cater for weddings/parties/anything. The town is small with so not many other shops around, but enough to get supplies or try some takesway from a couple of places. I went to the hotel a few times while staying at a town 8km away, (in Morven - which there are no shops. I'd recommend that if you were driving through Culcairn, you should stop at least for one drink and experience some laid back country...
Read moreArriving about 7pm, we requested a room. Check-in promised one with a fan, which we then had to request. Unblinkingly she charged us 50% more than the advertised rack rate and let us find the room upstairs over heavily stained, ancient carpet. It faced the restaurant exhaust system, through decrepit long windows and torn fly screens. We did not try the restaurant as a request at the bar for a wine list elicited the response 'what sort of wine do you want?'! There was wi-fi, but 'Sorry, only the manager (not present) knows what the password is. In the words of Spike Milligan, turning on the room lighting seemed to make the room look darker. The highlight of its furniture was an old stool as my bed side table. Sheets and towels did seem clean, but bathrooms were truly ordinary.||'Faded beauty, indeed'. The beauty faded here so long ago that it should have been closed. An insult to the group 'Pubstay', whose logo hung beside...
