Visited here after reading about the place in an article about country Victorian bakeries. Ordinarily, I just drive through Dunkeld without stopping. Probably should have kept driving this day, too.
At 12.30pm 🙄 all the pies were sold out with the exception of one lonely chicken and veg pie 🤢, the only other choice were "beef" Cornish Pasties, I dislike chicken pies so there was only one choice for me here, luckily, or so I thought at the time, I quite like a good Cornish Pasty.
After skipping breakfast, I was ravishingly hungry, looking down at the three large cakes in the glass case below my eyes, I asked the young girl what I was looking at. With a blank look on her face, she replied "its written on the glass" then turned to bag my pasty. I thought to myself, well there goes your chance to sell me something delicious and exciting from that cabinet. I stood back and read the scrawled inscriptions on the glass, which I couldn't see from where I stood moments before, and decided on having a slice of the chocolate cake.
On leaving I pondered my choice of this slight detour and change of my normal plans of eating at my regular place in Hamilton, the bakery didn't have what I wanted - a decent pie, it also didn't have the happy, friendly country bakery service with the girl inside giving me the vibe I was somehow spoiling her day with my presence. Still, I had a Cornish Pasty.
Further down the road, after waiting the obligatory baked treat cooling off period, I stopped to savour the Cornish Pasty .... wow, what a shock, first bite nothing out of the ordinary, a mouthful of flaky pastry .. the second bite .. pie! It was filled with meat pie filling! Beef and gravy, albeit with chunks of potato and carrot, but runny gravy and soft meat chunks. Like awww hell no this isn't a Cornish Pasty! It was nice I must admit but it wasn't what I expected, if you order a Hawaiian pizza and get spaghetti bol on a pizza base sure it'll probably taste ok but it's not what you ordered. Same scenario in my head.
More regrets in visiting the Dunkeld Old Bakery.
The chocolate cake was just a chocolate brownie with icing sugar, could have made it myself with a packet mix from woolies.
... I drove on thinking things like "never again" and "hmmm what to have for dinner in SA" .. yep don't trust everything you read online .. except...
Read more☕️🥐🥧Very beautiful little bakery and cafe off the main track, the place was super busy with locals, tourists and rightly so. It has such an amazing country feel and does the basics amazing without trying to do to much. They have seating inside and outside but we just stopped for a coffee and a bite to eat on the run. The coffee was top notch (long black and cappuccino) Sausage roll with relish was clearly home made and so much better than your standard bakery one. Wouldn’t say it’s cheap but the old saying you get what you pay for is on the money. This place is a must try if you’re passing...
Read moreI found this by luck. Cute little cottage, gorgeous on an autumn day with the big plane tree and the ornamental grape vine. It was pretty busy for the morning tea rush, but I felt the time I waited for coffee and cake was very fair. The coffee was awesome! The apple slice was delicious! I enjoyed sitting in the sunshine, listening to the travelling community patrons talking about their travels. I'll certainly be back here from time to time. Much better than sitting out on the main road with the traffic. I've yet to try the sourdough, but will definitely grab a loaf on...
