My friend organised a wine tasting and lunch for our families on a beautiful, sunny day — but unfortunately, the experience was disappointing from the outset. The staff member who seated us for the tasting opened with rapid-fire questions like “Red? White? What do you like?” with little context or explanation. For a group attending a wine tasting, this approach felt more like an interrogation than a welcome. Rather than offering any guidance, she seemed impatient and disinterested, and when we paused to read the extensive wine list, she asked, “Do you even like wine?” — a rude and condescending remark that set the tone for the visit.
Things didn’t improve during lunch. We were seated next to a sheet of clear vinyl with the midday sun beating down directly on us. It was physically unpleasant and impossible to enjoy a meal. When we asked whether a shade could be drawn down, we were told no and that “the sun will move” — as if that were an acceptable solution. There was no effort to assist or show concern, despite many shaded tables in the courtyard clearly available at the time. When we asked to move, the only alternative offered was a cramped barrel table at the entrance with just three chairs to sit seperately — hardly accommodating for a family group, and the offer was made with an unmistakable “take it or leave it” tone. When my friend asked for another napkin because her one was soiled, the waitress asked " and what is wrong with the other one?". So she had to explain herself.
From start to finish, the staff seemed uninterested in providing even basic hospitality. The atmosphere was unwelcoming, the service indifferent, and the wines themselves were not to our taste — many were sharp, vinegary, and unbalanced. It’s a shame, because the setting had potential, but the complete lack of customer care made the entire experience one we wouldn’t return for.
With plenty of other beautiful wineries in the region, with exceptionally curated wine tasting experiences, and warm professional hospitality- I'd give...
Read moreWe visited Mt Bera for the first time almost two weeks ago and it was a wonderful visit. (Sorry for the delay in writing this review guys). On a cold wintry day, we chose to sit inside near the fire, rather than outside on the deck. Our hosts kindly joined two tables so five of us could sit together. It was a lovely and warm atmosphere and happy time for us, during which we met almost all the family. COVID-19 restrictions meant that wine tastings were at the tables rather than the bar. This obviously makes more work for the family, but for us we felt special to have our tastings brought to us. The wine list is extensive, reasonably priced and there was no way we could do justice to it in one visit, so I concentrated on the Pinot Noirs which were delicious and a full glass was an excellent choice to accompany lunch. I also enjoyed the Ebullient Cab/Merlot blend, which although slightly sweet had delicious flavours and the Running with the Cows Tempranillo. Unfortunately that was about all I could taste in one short visit, but we will be back! The wines were all described and explained to us by the owner and his son which we appreciated and we also learned the story of Mt Bera. The menu is not extensive, but very reasonably priced, delicious and just what we wanted for our outing - we don’t enjoy a big lunch that leaves us stupefied for the rest of the day. Thanks to all the family for a...
Read moreThis was one of the best tasting/dining winery experiences that my wife and I have had. We had not heard of Mt Bera before, but facing a long drive, we decided to break it at Mt Bera based on the excellent Google reviews. We called ahead and reserved a table. When we arrived we were impressed by the garden setting and the lovely old building. The staff welcomed us warmly and took us straight to our table, providing us with menus and water. I was about to indicate that we would do some tasting after lunch when the server explained we could taste wines during our lunch. We started with a generous gourmet platter followed by sharing the delicious Lebanese Baharat spiced lamb. We also shared a lovely caramelised peach/almond cake for dessert. Our meal was spread over 2.5 hours during which we tasted 19 of the Mt Bera wines - as designated driver I had to spit out all my tastings which was disappointing because we tasted some very nice wines. We particularly liked the Dreamcatcher SB and the Boundless Horizons Gruner Veltliner, Pinot Noir and Syrah. We departed with a mixed case of 12 bottles of our preferred wines. During the whole experience we were overwhelmed by the top quality service and friendliness of the staff. It's a pity that Mt Bera is so far from our home...
