You don’t expect much when you walk into a fast food place in a town like Kempsey. If you've been to the local Macca’s or stumbled into Lou’s Café on a bad day, you know the standard’s usually set low—real low.
But KFC? KFC surprised me.
First thing I noticed: it was clean. Like, actually clean. Tables wiped down. Bins not overflowing. The floor didn’t stick to my shoes, and I didn’t feel like I needed a tetanus shot just for using the bathroom. And yes, I checked—the bathroom smelled like lemon cleaner. That alone was enough to give me hope.
I ordered a Zinger Box with wicked wings and chips. The wait was short—maybe five minutes—and the guy behind the counter actually looked like he gave a damn. He said “Have a good one” and meant it. Rare.
Now, the food. KFC’s always going to be greasy, but this was the good kind of greasy. The chicken was fresh. Crunchy coating, juicy inside. Chips were hot and salty—not soggy, not cold, just right. And the bread roll? Soft. Didn’t even need the butter they give you.
What really hit me though was the vibe. For once, a fast food joint that didn’t feel like it was crumbling under the weight of neglect. A few families were eating, some teens were laughing in a corner booth, and the staff were actually moving with purpose, not just dragging themselves through the motions.
It’s not fancy. It’s not trying to be. But it’s functional, it’s friendly, and most importantly—it’s reliable. You can go there late on a Wednesday night, sit down, and not feel like the walls are closing in around you.
In a town full of places that feel like they’ve stopped caring, KFC Kempsey is holding the line.
Rating: 6/5 Hot food. Clean store. Friendly staff. It’s not a five-star restaurant—it’s better. It’s the one place in town where you know exactly what you’re gonna get, and for once, that’s...
Read moreOn entering the shop, I knew it was not going to bode well, rubbish on the floor and dirty tables. I asked the young man how long the chicken had been cooked and he just shrugged his shoulder. How rude is that?? The other young girl at the register was confused by the ordering system and not in the least bit interested in being there or providing any level of the customer service experience. Its turns out the dried up chicken had likely been out for a while, as it was very dark brown colour, over greasy and practically tasteless, indicating it had been sitting for too long or cooked in filthy dirty oil. The chips were cold and rubbery, but at the same time not quite cooked. The spicy chicken pieces were just batter, with very little chicken inside, with tasteless chicken nuggets that could have been tofu or foam rubber?? The jalapeno slaw had lettuce in it and no jalapeno's, with a drizzle of somewhat spiced mayo, who the hell puts lettuce in coleslaw? My recommendations is don't go there, as it turns out you are parting with your hard earned dollars for no particular rewarding reason. For this business to survive, it must surely retrain all the ignorant rude staff in customer service, food preparation and presentation and keeping the...
Read moreafter my efforts to find a good spot to have a dine in dinner somewhere in kempsey after a long day at work failed as nothing is open and all the Chinese places do not do dine in i was forced to find a meal to eat here. i thought that i would be able to rely on KFC to refuel my hunger. i was extremely dissapointed to find that all my chicken was under cooked. at first they insisted that the raw chicken was only that colour because of the seasoning but i know better than to eat a fluro pink piece of chicken. i then got refunded my money after a considerable effort and instead was forced to find a servo to continue my meal seeking journey. in conclusion if i ever had to pass through kempsey again i would simply just go hungry as this option leaves me with less...
