Stopped here as the place we were intending on going to was closed. We drove back a short distance to Kafe Koala Kennett River and found we were the only people there. Ordered some tea and they do a fantastic fish and chips. We had a great natter with a Brit called Aimee who was lovely and a credit to the store/café telling us lots of information about the area – including the koala walk, which is actually just a road running between the café and the nearby caravan park where lots of wild koalas live in the trees and are easily seen. We actually returned here the following day for breakfast, as we were staying nearby. Full English and Yorkshire Tea – spot on! We spoke to the owner Glenda and found out she also sells bags of wild bird seed and so we bought some and yes we got bombarded by all sorts of birds including Rosellas, King parrots and sulphur crested cockatoos to name a few, who knew exactly what we had in our hands. We then did the Koala Walk, walking about 2 – 3 Km up a slowly winding hill and saw over a dozen koalas, some awake and feeding, some sleeping, some big and some small. Such a treat and if you are able, take the walk and see them for yourself. You are able to drive up the road but it would be a lot harder to see them as we had to take our time to spot them. Great café, great owner, and great staff with all their...
Read moreWe made the trek from Melbourne to see the koalas and enjoy a Devonshire tea at Kafe Koala on the recommendation of a friend. Unfortunately it had started raining by the time we got there so visiting the koalas was off the agenda. We went into the Kafe and read the menu board. Between us we ordered the barramundi burger, Thai chicken curry, a toasted cheese sandwich and fish and chips. All I can say is YUM! Feedback was that the food was delicious...even the cheese toasti surpassed expectations with nice thick slices of melted cheese in between thick toasted bread with the perfect amount of butter. The curry was perfect size for lunch and exactly the right amount of chilli heat in it and the barramundi burger was really tasty. Hot chips were perfectly fluffy in the inside while being crunchy and salty on the outside. We didn't get to the Devonshire tea but as we will definitely be back, we'll try it next time. I only took off one star because we were travelling with a disabled passenger and while the staff was really accommodating the cafe eating area would not have been accessible had she been in a wheelchair or mobility scooter as there is a step down to the tables...
