Nillumbik Estate — Restaurant in Melbourne

The Wine Guild of South Australia visited Nillumbik Estate for a Masterclass during a visit to the Yarra Valley in October. It was the best experience of our trip. Owner-winemaker John Tregambe and his helpers were outstanding hosts and the Masterclass he presented was the cream on top of a rich experience. He was passionate and clearly proud of his wines. It was clear he was a skilled presenter as he led us through an evaluation of two vintages of his Pinot Noir. His wines were clearly of excellent quality and displayed the sense of place that many look for now. The excellent wood oven pizza lunch was generous and delicious. Been here a few times, and I could rate this place exactly the same for each visit. Great location, very serene with lovely views. Prices are reasonable and the food is tasty and the pizzas are amazing. Unfortunately, although the staff are friendly, the service is woefully bad. Has been every time. Most tables around us didn’t have food on the table. Today it took 20 minutes for the plates to arrive on the table and another 10 minutes for a Chardonnay and a coffee to arrive. Then the pizza came sometime after that. I would have hoped that service had picked up and the owners had some training in the hospitality business.

If you want somewhere unpretentious, with a spectacular views, great food and wine and wonderful service, then this is your place. Came today for lunch and it was wonderful. Delicious pizzas (loved all of the ones we tried but the mushroom was definitely a stand out) and excellent wines, particularly loved the option of having the wine tasting flight. The only suggestion we have is that it would have been great to have a green salad option on the menu, with two of our party not being big fans of raw tomato, we found the two tomato-heavy options offered a bit limiting.
