After receiving a strong recommendation some time ago, we were genuinely looking forward to finally dining at Tedesca. Unfortunately, the experience fell far short of expectations in every way – from the food and service to the overall atmosphere. Food: We had spent the week in the region celebrating my birthday and enjoyed several exceptional meals at venues including Ten Minutes by Tractor, Cape, Audrey’s, Yabby Lake, Doot Doot, and Paringa. Regrettably, Tedesca was by far the most underwhelming. The food was unremarkable, lacking both creativity and flavour – a stark contrast to the calibre we experienced elsewhere in the region. It felt outdated and uninspired, with little to justify its reputation or price point. Service: The service was, frankly, appalling. Due to my wife being over 38 weeks pregnant, we requested a change from the booth seating to a regular table, which the staff kindly accommodated. Initially, we were served by a warm and attentive young woman, but after the seating change we were assigned a male French waiter who displayed complete disinterest in our experience. His service was inattentive and at times outright rude. He served a $40 glass of wine in a visibly dirty glass containing what appeared to be cork residue. Rather than replacing it, he simply poured the wine into another glass and returned it – visibly annoyed that we raised the issue. Our cocktails were left sitting on the bar for over 10 minutes, losing their chill before they ever reached us. Throughout the meal, he never once asked how our food or drinks were, nor did he attempt to engage with us in any meaningful way. Eventually, we were served by a rotating cast of other staff members, none of whom seemed particularly informed or consistent. It was clear other tables were being offered a full, curated experience – including garden walks and thoughtful service – while we were all but ignored. Even with our waters! One waiter stated our sparkling water was empty and asked if we would like another, we declined as at this point we just wanted to exit. Our French waiter returned with still tap water to which we declined stating we did not want any, then he pulled out a half a bottle of our sparkling water from the cooler suggesting we ‘still had heaps of water’ then as if we were an inconvenience again, let out a large and audible SIGH! Atmosphere: The atmosphere was chaotic and far from the intimate, refined environment one would expect from a restaurant of this reputation. Two large tables dominated the space – one of 10 guests, the other of 6 to 8 – both of which were extremely loud. Guests were standing, walking around the dining room, and even gathered directly beside our table to talk with staff. It was intrusive and unpleasant. There seemed to be no effort to manage noise levels or preserve the experience for other diners. Final Impressions: The final course, dessert, was inedible and left untouched. When my wife explained to the waiter that she enjoys quince but found the dish poorly executed, he laughed in her face. He never returned to our table after that moment, and we had to ask another staff member for our bill. In summary, this was an extremely disappointing experience from start to finish. We left feeling as though our presence was an inconvenience rather than welcomed, and the level of service was entirely unbefitting of a restaurant with such high acclaim. I would strongly recommend considering alternative venues in the region that genuinely understand hospitality and quality – this was, quite simply,...
Read moreTedesca, long the subject of fervent praise and whispered accolades, beckoned with the promise of an extraordinary culinary journey. Seated atop the illustrious Red Hill, enveloped in an ambiance of rustic charm and farm-to-table allure, one couldn't help but anticipate a revelation befitting the occasion of a husband's birthday celebration.
Commencing with commendations, the service at Tedesca was nothing short of exemplary. Attentive waitstaff, their every gesture steeped in professionalism, ensured a seamless dining experience. From the meticulous folding of napkins to the prompt replenishment of water glasses, their dedication to hospitality was evident throughout. However, a missed opportunity arose as the waitstaff, while diligent in their duties, missed the opportunity to gain feedback after each course.
The restaurant's picturesque locale, amidst rolling hills and bountiful farm produce, imbued the dining experience with a sense of pastoral charm and gastronomic promise. Yet, regrettably, the culinary offerings failed to meet expectations. A procession of lackluster dishes unfolded, marred by a dearth of depth and flavor. From a lackluster anchovy-infused dough ball to a tepid array of antipasti, each course fell short of the anticipated culinary crescendo.
Repeated iterations of a monotonous red pepper sauce across multiple courses proved to be a culinary misstep, inducing a sense of redundancy and diminishing returns. The tepid pasta dish, featuring an unpalatable amalgamation of red peppers and mussels, left a bitter aftertaste of disappointment.
While a glimmer of hope emerged with the savory barramundi course, its execution lacked finesse and nuance. The absence of accompanying sauces or citrus accents left the dish wanting for depth and complexity.
A redemption of sorts arrived with the dessert course, a harmonious ensemble of caramelised apples and velvety kefir ice cream. Yet, it proved to be a fleeting reprieve amidst a sea of culinary mediocrity.
In summation, while Tedesca’s enchanting ambiance and attentive service endeared the establishment to its patrons, the culinary execution failed to match the lofty expectations set forth by its acclaim. A lack of menu diversity, coupled with the repetitive use of a singular sauce, detracted from the overall dining experience. Though the ambiance and service may have salvaged the afternoon, the paltry offerings left much to be desired, leaving us yearning for a more fulfilling...
Read moreI was going to write a completely original review, but found a year-old review from a previous customer, one Luca, and it perfectly sums up my own experience. I replicate it here:
"Rude and aloof service...,food was not a standout, undersized servings, not worth the money at all. Price does not reflect what you get. ... More brand than substance."
The problem is not that the place is not nice, it's a lovely setting. Nor is the food 'bad' per se, in fact it's good. In my view, it's just not really that exceptional, and when you're paying over half a grand for two people for a meal and drinks, you expect a little more than 'good'. Expectations were set before, the place was recommended to me by multiple people. The thing is there are at least a dozen other places in Melbourne where you can have a substantially better meal at the same price, or even less.
On top of that, the amounts they give you are so minuscule, even by comparison to other fine dining restaurants. Almost felt like I was a kid playing with a make-belief restaurant play-set when I had to divide up a single duck breast served as a 'main' for two people. I kid you not, the salad that came with it had less than ten smallish leaves, which left each person with about 3-4 small leaves, a few hazelnuts, and some tiny wedges of persimmon. It's almost laughable.
The service is another thing. I don't want to generalise, because it may have been a one-off. The staff were not particularly friendly and the attitude was haughty. In particular, I was not very pleased when we were curtly "asked' whether we wanted the bill and then given it a second or two later, as though it was some low-price, high-turnover joint and they needed us to leave so that they could clear the table. Not quite the vibe for a 'lazy lunch'. Have been to lots of nice, expensive places, and it's my opinion that the service here is at the lower end of the spectrum.
All in all, your money is better spent elsewhere, the place is largely hype, one for those with more money than sense (sad to say I fell into this category on this occasion). I give it 3 stars because it's not atrocious, just overpriced, overrated and unremarkable,...
