Had a triple milestone birthday family celebration - 80th, 50th & 20th birthdays with 20 guests & booked weeks ahead for midday. At 1.40pm on the day just after most of our guests had finished their main meal we were told by the staff we needed to leave by 2pm as they needed the tables for another booking. We hadn't even started with cutting the cake, which incidentally will not be stored by the venue either so we kept it with us & hoped it wouldn't start to sweat on such a nice day, so we hurriedly got the cake ready, cut & ate & left, one of our guests having just ordered a coffee too which staff then tipped into a take-away cup on the way out. No mention during the previous weeks that we would only have half the afternoon time for our table despite me attending the site to book & numerous calls to confirm before the day. Thought we were in for a relaxing afternoon with catching up with local guests and still having coffees etc after cake in the beautiful setting that we have been to before with no issues but apparently not. One of our guests also commented on the answer to her request at counter if she was able to order a slightly different toasted sandwich with avocado - "No". Just "No" she tells me, not "no, sorry, unfortunately that's not on our menu" etc - and she also observed this happen to the man behind her, not with our party, requesting something. It did give us a laugh at least. Communication & manners apparently not a done thing anymore & the most memorable part of our triple celebration is the embarrassment of our, some of them elderly, guests being pushed out of the venue in a hurry. Definitely sourcing a better place for our next gathering & will be asking if there's a deadline for finishing our meal by just in case it's...
Read moreI've been to Warran Glen Cafe about a dozen times over the last few years. Every time I'm reluctant to return because I've found the food just a little pricey. But every time I go there, the food IS excellent, service great and the location is perfect. If there was only one criticism it would be that it gets so busy it becomes noisy. And really, that's being a little pedantic. Warran Glen caters well for vegetarians and although I'm not one, I'm attracted to the lovely pumpkin, beetroot and feta salad. In fact all the salads are fresh and tasty. I'm told by my seafood eating friends that the calamari is good.Even the lovely little tarts and cakes for dessert are a good portion size, not those enormous slices of chocolate cake that you feel obliged to eat. On my last occasion, I was fortunate to celebrate a special event with a friend and were bought two little bottles of champagne which were brought out quite ceremoniously after being asked by the staff 'is there a special occasion?' That was a nice touch. Can't fault the service. There are small and large tables so if you have a group you will be well catered for. A booking is always wise. Remember - if you want something quiet and intimate, this may not be the place unless you ask when booking for something on the deck. Carparking is good, although again, it gets busy. Location is central to Ringwood, Templestowe, Lilydale etc and is in a lovely part of Warrandyte, not far from the...
Read moreI was blown away by the stunning space the cafe is located in. I have visited the nursery itself before but had no idea the eatery was so spacious with plenty of outdoor dining room but also a lovely greenhouse style area inside. The food itself is order at the counter service.
For a brunch destination I expect more from the offering but perhaps it’s taking its target audience into account. I would definitely recommend going here for the atmosphere but the menu items are somewhat limited. Don’t expect to see fresh juices or smoothies which for me tend to be a minimum base requirement of the Melbourne brunch scene.
You also don’t see an all day breakfast and lunch menu so pick your time wisely based on your preference. I had the avocado toast today which was certainly enjoyable but visually it was absolutely covered in rocket so much so that I couldn’t even see the avo. My husband got the Florentine eggs which he enjoyed but aren’t exactly breaking the breakfast boundaries in terms of creativity, again perhaps it’s a matter of catering to the target market.
I wish we had had an opportunity to try the cakes as they actually looked and sounded phenomenal and there was an extensive array of delights to choose from. Next time I’m in the market for a relaxed ambiance I would definitely consider a scone or two from Warranglen as the venue itself is well...
