One of the three 'classic' Outback NSW pubs on/near the Grawin opal fields.
These are local watering holes that are now tourist attractions. 🍻 Don't expect a cheap drink, but do fall in love with heaps of kitch.
Of the three, this one felt the priciest and least 'local'. We paid $16 for a cup of wine and a ginger beer. The guy in front paid the same for a can of beer and a coke. I got the vibe they were used to buckets of tourists and didn't mind the captive audience.
See my review of the Club in the Scrub for how the Glengarry's high prices inspired this other pub to be founded!
❗ Of the three, this is also the only one that wouldn't give me tap water to drink. They said there had been a recent "mouse plague" and suggested I buy bottled.
Heaps of seating, indoor and out.
⛏️ Sports a fossiking spot where you'll find some potch and maybe an opal with color if you're lucky. Tip: dig around in a sunny spot, the potch (colorless grey opal) will shine in the sun like glass.
Of the fossiking, this one had the best opal finds, as the rocks went through the wash. This means they're clean and shiny and often just on the surface or need minor...
Read moreNow my 5 star rating is a combined rating on attending the Three Pubs In the Scrub road trip in Grawin out from Lightening Ridge as a tourist never previously having been at Lightening Ridge. I had not even considered visiting Grawin until told of this area and the 3 Pubs by the LR Tourist Info office. Easy drive out to Grawin and we stopped at each Pub for a drink and a bite to eat. Each pub is unique and represents the character of the area. It is the outback so don't expect upmarket or 5 star at any of the 3 pubs. What you do get is cold beer and tasty quality food from limited menu. The best description I will say is that the Grawin area is "unique" and populated with characters. Travelling this dar into Outback NSW to get to LR it would be foolish not to drive the extra 70km and miss the 3 Pubs in the Scrub experience and a true look at the workings of a real opal field. Well done to the staff who keep the Glengarry Hilton, Sheppard's Inn and The Grawn Club up and operating. The Glengarry steak hamburger is a must. Highly recommend visiting here and a daylight drive around Grawin. Take yr camera for a...
Read moreJust had the best Christmas Day lunch ever at this pub!!! B'anka the manager is amazing. Great family of staff, friendly and helpful. Also found an opal chip near the Car Park straight away.... good omen lol. So,a huge shout out to B'anka the manager on duty. Also her partner Mitch.. She's 6months pregnant with an adorable pre schooler in tow but they managed to make a huge feast for 50-100 ppl, as well as running the bar etc. and always with a smile on her face. Cannot praise her enough. And her food was IN-CREDIBLE! Mountains of fresh prawns, roast meats all done beautifully juicy and soft, carved ham for days, a dozen great salads (particularly the potato salad with her Nans recipe!!) and then a massive dessert bar (the pav was great). One tiny flaw was bar service a little slow due to the amount of customers on Xmas day. But that's to be expected :) Atmosphere is great, food great, staff all great.... can't praise enough. Will be coming back...
