I feel like I've stumbled on a local secret. The Wiseman's Ferry area, during our long weekend stay, was recovering from the damage from recent floods. As such our family plans for those few days were pretty much written off - the orchards weren't open for fruit picking so all we did was walk around and sit on the ferries to entertain the kids. We didn't realise so much would be unavailable. It's a sad situation and I hope the area can bounce back well. Making the most of the situation we decided to explore a little on the way home and happened upon the Wombat Café. Despite not technically being open at the time we stopped by (they were prepping for a later event) we were welcomed in and were able to order breakfast. The food was the highlight from the entire long weekend and exactly the kind of thing we were looking for. We had the big breakfast, and nuggets and cheese toasties for the kids. Even our coffees had a local touch - the wombat stencil was a one-off created by a local (see photo). Everything was presented well and made with care - it was flavoursome, not salty or oily, with an emphasis on good hearty food. Indeed speaking at length with the owner/operator (Annetta?) her aim is on quality food in her own style, which is awesome to see. The pastries she showed me were very impressive and we were lucky enough to leave with a deliciously ornate looking chicken and leek pie (see photo). The views were also not lacking behind the views of the establishments in the town centre. It's easily a place you can sit around and soak in the surrounds. The kids loved seeing the "oreo" cows (belted galloway?) grazing just below the café. I wish Annetta, her husband, and the kitchen team all the best and look forward to stopping in again to try more of the menu.

I visited Wombat Cafe yesterday, and honestly, it was one of the most mesmerizing experiences I’ve had in a long time. Nestled in the countryside, this place feels like a true hidden gem. The surroundings are absolutely breathtaking – peaceful views that make you want to just sit, sip your coffee, and soak it all in. From the moment I arrived, the staff made me feel incredibly welcome. They are genuinely warm, friendly, and go out of their way to make you comfortable, which adds so much charm to the whole experience. Another highlight that made my visit even more special was meeting the sweetest little dog there – a calm, gentle, and very pretty “Gundi girl.” She added such a homely and heartwarming touch to the place. As for the food and drinks, everything was lovely, but the coffee was truly the star of the day – smooth, rich, and absolutely perfect. You can tell they really care about quality. Wombat Cafe has that rare combination of stunning scenery, warm hospitality, and amazing coffee that makes you want to come back again and again. It’s definitely going to be my go-to spot every time I visit Wisemans Ferry, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful, memorable cafe experience in the countryside.
