Where do I start! So a bit of context I was born in Newcastle moved to Sydney really young and never got to experience Henny penny. Return trip to Newcastle when I got my licence I came across this place and vowed to return to try it. Every return trip I seem to arrive at the destination and something just makes me eat elsewhere. Well this weekend I made the decision. I’m going to visit and nothing was getting in my way.
We started our 3 hour journey towards the closest Henny penny. Once I got closer to the hunter I noticed 3 star average reviews at all the locations. This had me worried. But nothing was stopping me. I decided on edgeworth being the closest to me without going to far out of my way while having a slightly higher 3 star rating. The gps showed we would arrive 10 minutes before the store opened making it an ideal stop. Also giving me the sense that we would receive the freshest food of the day.
So we pull into the car park and see the restaurant she’s a bit run down and I remember why I always decided against going there. However there was no pulling out today. Surely there’s a reason this brand is still around after all these years. The place looks the same as I could imagine it did in the 1970s. After a short break in the car we seen the closed sign flop to open and we decided head in and see what the hype is about.
Service 10/10 We were greeted when we entered the store. Good service from the chap at the counter we decided on our meals and everything went as planned. We asked if there were available toilets and he was happy to open them up. (I think something was mentioned that these might not get used very often. They were very out of date but clean no issues here.
Atmosphere 5/10 This place is verrry outdated. It gave a very vintage feel the tables and chairs are way too small for the average fast food consumer. I have a feeling people don’t dine in too often. Probably not somewhere I would have a family lunch/dinner.
Food 2.5/10 I really think a lot of this 2.5 was the fact it was fresh. So I ordered a chicken and mayo roll and chips. I was going to opt for some more (mainly the fried chicken) but my heart wouldn’t let me. I thought I’d wait to see how the roll was first. Unfortunately the bun was about as long as the palm of my hand. Very obviously microwaved. Chicken was flavourless while the mayo was average. The whole roll was definitely nuked in the microwave and this caused the bun to harden as the minutes went by I could imagine if we got a takeaway it would be buggered by the time we got home. The chips were definitely not cooked in the best oil. However they were seasoned and tolerable. Much better than the roll and maybe I’m being generous but I was after all very hungry.
I was on the fence between 2-3 stars and landed on 2. I definitely wouldn’t rush back. To be honest I think this place leaves a lot to be desired and there is ample...
Read moreHenny Penny, the home of the deep fried or roast chicken meal with veggies, gravy chips etc from my childhood and into adulthood.
I visit now mostly for chicken and gravy rolls / boneless fillets as a treat. Their gravy is S tier, above any beyond any gravy available from a multi-location store with a drive-thru.
I'll be forever sad if we lose any more franchises so I support them when I can.
Nobody does fried chicken like them IMO but their roasted spuds / veggies etc with gravy elevate them above others.
KFC is rubbish.
And RR won't even serve me a chicken and gravy roll. Yeah it's bigger but they won't even make it anymore and just give you the ingredients to make it if they'll serve it to you.
Henny Penny is a local institution that needs to be protected. They took away my local HP and replaced it with a souless KFC that can't even serve me a fried chicken and gravy / veggie line that is edible.
HP does roast dinner so well they'd nearly put the local RSL out of business if they...
Read moreJust went through the drive thru at Edgeworth Henny Penny they need a new speaker as the traffic and shop noises affect how they hear our order, we had to repeat our order 3 times and they still got it wrong the young person who repeated the order at the window spoke so fast we could hardly understand him we paid $41 to then get home and realise we didn’t get the 3 piece we asked but only 2 pieces that were so dry and one piece was a tiny drumstick when I rang was only told I ordered a 2 piece If your staff heard our order correctly I wouldn’t need to ring up and complain and my pasta salad taste like it’s a week old and wasn’t cold and was also placed in the same bag as the hot gravy and potato and gravy, check your food before you drive home they advertise they cook fresh but mine...
