If there is one visit destination around Moffatdale which deserves a visit is the site on Lake Barambah occupied by the Pendergast family-it has a circular offering; grapes are grown on site, wine made by a clever chap Drew with years of experience, a restaurant nearby serving those on site, a cellar door tasting bar to buy while on the run, a tavern adjacent sells beers and spirits (for non wine drinkers); if you tire there is onsite accommodation; need a wedding, that's catered for by 150 person conference centre; creating demands for up to four or more chefs. It fits the calibre of visit local, drink local, respect local and bring your friends for a top experience.
I visited Moffatdale last Monday and remarked how good the 2021 vintage had been for the South Burnett (tasted exciting reds). As an experienced wine tour guide (I have hosted 25 of these in Italy and France over the past 10 years); I see the local reds in this region through the Master of Wine prism; just as expertly as a spiced Sicilian nero d'avola or a chewy Tuscan sangiovese.
Around Moffatdale the reds are mid-weight (not dense as with some warmer South Australian regions); not modest weight and crispy like the cooler nearby Granite Belt (cold place); and commonplace is easy drink tempranillo or medium bodied shiraz; neither very oaky to stay on trend with Gen X and Z. If you like big stuff ask at Dusty for the saperavi grape or across the road at Clovely Estate, request petit verdot (bruiser wines, big bodied, higher alcohol for muscled palates).
And before you go at the Prendergast place take a taste of their old fortifieds, now a bit old fashioned but warming in June when its under 10 degrees outside. Joe has been carefully stocking white verdelho and muscat, or some plumcake-style shiraz with a liqueur bent since 2003; and retained these bases so your drinks get rich and richer every year since. Raise a glass to Dusty Hill the wine brand; you must visit. Then buy wine, eat there, and eventually take an...
Read moreIt's a bit off the Wide Bay HWY but the rout was scenic and worth the detour. The restaurant is only half the experience and the Irish pub atmospher and menu was great; we also got to wine taste at the front door and look through the local gourmet produce store. Prendergasts is well designed with wheel chair access and you can chose to sit in multiple locations inside or on the large veranda and adjacent garden area . We had 3 meals, mine was the Lamb & rosemary pie which was 4 + stars, my friends gave the seafood chowder a 3 and a 4 + star rating. It's not cheap but currently nothing is and I think we got value for money. All the staff were fabulous and I think it's a great over 50s destination. I didnt get time to look at the accommodation so I may go bak and review that later as it...
Read moreMy wife and I stayed over the weekend 16/17 Aug. We’ve been meaning to visit for some time and weren’t disappointed in any aspect of our experience. Fantastic place to visit. The staff were welcoming, friendly, and attentive. The tavern and grounds were a great place for a drink and dinner was awesome. We stayed in the new Stables in the new part of the property. Beautiful room with a great view of the dam, and the bed was heavenly. We’ll go back with friends and enjoy a house close to the tavern, but also go back and enjoy the distillery and brewery once open. This is a true gem….get there people! Goomeri Bakery on the way home to Brisbane was also just as good as it always is albeit busy but worth the wait and the staff were friendly. Can’t...
