I have frequented the St. Bernards Hotel on numerous times over the last 40 years...
I have always enjoyed the atmosphere of the old pub feel along with the panoramic views out over the coastline...
I have considered the meals to be of average score...
However, 3 weeks ago I had lunch here with my partner. I must say I walked away after lunch a little disappointed...
Firstly, we were told there would be a wait of an hour. Secondly, we had to round someone up to come clear the table and wipe it clean, and thirdly I was not told about a surcharge until I was about to swipe my card to complete the payment...
So while the mention of the surcharge was communicated at the point of sale, it merely complies with the requirements set out under the ACCC legislation regarding surcharges and fees etc...
When I queried the reason for the surcharge, I was told by the young woman that served me it covered the Sunday trade...
I'd like to point out to the business owner that perhaps you should cleary display the fact that you charge a surcharge for Sunday trade...
And you have a legal obligation under the ACCC legislation to both clearly display the rate and reason for the surcharges being applied...
Just for the record, the total cost of the meals came to $54.00...
The surcharge applied was $8.35 and a further charge for the use of a debit card...
To sum it up, my recommendation would be if you are going to charge a 15% surcharge for standard Sunday trade perhaps you might like to consider employing adequate staff so -
1/. customers aren't waiting over an hour for two basic meals, 2/. staff do the rounds on a regular basis to check on what tables require cleaning prior to someone taking up a position for a meal, and most importantly 3/. provide clear and adequate signage to inform customers of the surcharge prior to them making any orders...
I'll ask the question, I can shop at Coles any day of the week and not be charged a surcharge...
I can also shop at a small owner operated fruit and vegetable shop on the weekends and not be charged a surcharge...
So why is it all of a sudden, we go out to cafes, restaurants, pubs and the likes and we are all slugged a surcharge for a standard Sunday trade...
How you manage your business is entirely your issue in all aspects...
It should not be the customers issue regarding pay rates which then entail surcharges being applied for a standard Sunday trade. Next it will apply to Saturdays and so on...
So on that note, I will not be visiting the St. Bernards Hotel in...
Read moreWe made a reservation & put down that is was our wedding anniversary. ( we had our wedding dinner here 5 years ago ). We requested a outdoor table as we wanted to watch the sunset.
We arrived and did not know where to check in for our reservation. No signs anywhere or staff to great people arriving. We wandered to the order desk and asked where do we go. Was walked over to the bar and the lady said our table was just there no.24. Seated right next to the bar. After we specified on our reservation that we wanted an outdoor table. The lady was also rudely yelling at people wondering in if they had a reservation.
We had a look outside and was a few tables available. We went back to the reservation "desk" and asked if we could be seated outside. She looked surprised when she checked our reservation & was seated inside in the first place.
She said that was fine and to seat anywhere outside. At this time we noticed the tables were all wet and we asked if there was something to wipe down the table. Was handed a rag and was expected to do it ourselves! After we found a table and wiped our own table down the table was rocky as anything. We just got up and left.
Such bad service & extremely disappointed! Would not recommend. Never have we just walked out of a restaurant before and especially on our wedding anniversary. To specify it was a special occasion on the reservation & be treated so poorly on a night that was special to us. To be handed a rag and expected us to clean our own table is poor service.
Probably great place for a beer and some cafe food but apart from that I wouldn't call it a restaurant.
Owners do not care clearly by judging on how many bad reviews on other couples dinner experiences here & no response back to...
Read moreI have been to St Bernard’s Hotel several times but I will not return especially not to dine. Service is terrible and food below average. Arrived at 1:20pm for our 1:30pm booking. Door staff pointed direction to our table no menus given. We ordered on the QR code straight away as we have three young children so wanted to get their food ordered early. We don’t usually order on QR codes as we usually always have our order forgotten or incorrect but given we weren’t given a menu and they weren’t on the table we thought it was the only option. After over an hour waiting for our food we watched everyone around us that arrived after us getting their food but there was no sign of even our entree. I asked one of the wait staff how much longer my order would be, she came back and said it’s coming they are just preparing it now. Our entree arrived and I said to the waiter ‘were we forgotten’ and he said ‘I think so’ and apologised. The meals came out except one and when the last one finally came out it was incorrect. Sauce and onion when asked not due to an allergy. When spoken to a different wait staff she couldn’t care and said ‘ my manager can discuss it’ when the manager arrived she was unapologetic, rude and lied saying that people are told it’s an hour wait which we were not and when I said we were forgotten she shrugged her shoulders and said we are busy on Sunday’s, no apology no care just said ill change this meal and refund this meal. Very disappointed as St Bernard’s is a beautiful location, however we will not be returning unless management has changed and there is...
