We were a booking of 6 but only 4 on the night as 2 couldn't make it. So we opted for the expensive let us feed you; 5 courses with matched wines. $82 per head plus $30 per head for the matched wines. So obviously we expected 5 courses with 5 matched wines. The first issue we had was the wine tasting size servings of wine we were poured. I pointed out we had opted for matched wines, not wine tasting. Fair enough the waitress agreed to scratch the wine bill as tasting was free for RAA members which was appreciated. At the end of service we felt we had only had 4 courses and certainly we were only served 4 matched wines? The waitress argued that we effectively shared my wife's vegetarian main as a fourth course??! There weren't 5 distinct courses, and only 4 matched wines so as far as I'm concerned we only got 4 courses... Any way we paid $82 per head for the experience and while the food was tasty, it really didn't deliver on expectations. We've dined elsewhere on 5 courses with matched wines and really enjoyed the experience which is why we went this option at the Slate Restaurant. Unfortunately we wouldn't recommend it, we were left disappointed and more so because it was a friends birthday....

From the moment you arrive you are met with the perfect balance between opulence and country charm.
Our table on the timber decking blended effortlessly into its surrounds as our uninterrupted view of the vineyards was a constant reminder of why we drove to Clare in the first place.
The menu options were plentiful, so our only choice was to order many and attempt to share hahaha
Zucchini Flowers w/ Prawn Mousse, Braised Octopus w/ Squid Ink, Pan Seard Mulloway, Pork Jowl and Duck Fat Potatoes were just some of the plates we thoroughly enjoyed.
One thing that stood out for us, was the attention given to Gluten Free options. As a Coeliac my wife quite often misses out on simple pleasures like bread but not at Slate. The house made GF bread was incredible, so much so we asked if they would sell a loaf.
Special shout out to our waitress Monique. Her bubbly personality, infectious laugh and passion for people only added to what was already a wonderful day.

Read moreVery unimpressed. We ordered the lamb, the garfish and the chicken. We were delivered beef, which the waitress took back and replaced with the lamb after about 15 minutes, which was what we had ordered. The chicken was served, medium rare, which was bloody around the bone. The lamb was very tough and gristly. For what we paid, $46, we expected much better. They did drop a complimentary salad to the table to make up for the incorrect mains being served, however, this was bland and tasteless. When the bill came, they had comped the 2 hassleback potato sides we had ordered. Which to be honest were the best parts of the meal. We had a really nice Pyke and Joyce Pinot Noir. I’ll be honest the staff seemed ambivalent to the fact, they made a mistake with the order. There was no apology offered with the delivery of the food or even when we paid the bill. We won’t be...
