Persevere with the worst dirt road in Kangaroo Island to actually make it up the hill to this lovely place with fab view. Remarkable oversight for a place that charges AUD100+ per head, frankly. The service from, mostly, 2 Vietnames ladies was wonderful (chatty, knowledgeable, and warm). The food itself not at the charged price level, but still very good and some degustatiom courses had very interesting elements, like the semi-pickled muscles on top of the mulloway fillet, sat in the midst of crab and pumpkin bisque. Salmon sashimi needed more of a zing, promised pork belly though well cooked, was particularly uninspiring as one only got tiny sliver of the advertised pork belly, the rest, for some reason back strap/loin (not mentioned on the menu or by waiters). I quickly finished the pork belly sliver (overcooked) and left the rest, as nothing interesting served with it except very good dark apple sauce. Highlight for me was the lamb tartare on nori, part of the 3 snacks tasting. I would have gladly had a slightly larger portion of it as a main instead of strange yolk confit mush dish and/or the pork loin. Oysters with Malay dressing and crispy curry leaf also part of the snacks trio, very good. Overall it was good, but not good value for money meal, as I expect a bit more wow for my buck, if I am paying circa $120 per head without wine. Given one can eat for well under that with wine for lunch in a 2 star Michelin Helene Darozze and the like, this was not well priced. That said, it's the only fine dining or even decent restaurant on the Island, so capitalism rules, and it is worth the visit for the local produce, solid menu, and good service with...
Read moreIf you're vegan (or even non vegan) I highly recommend Sunset Food and Wine! They didn't get a Chef's hat for nothing and their execution, finesse and talent truly shows in catering for my vegan request for their set menu (I did have to request this upfront at time of reservation). I COULD NOT fault anything that was placed in front of me as part of this starter, entrée, main and desert ensemble. Every element was perfect and so beautifully put together, I was absolutely blow away. My highlights from the meal was the potato rosti from the main and the chocolate moose and chia seed pudding. The portion sizes were perfect, well seasoned, elements were well balanced with taste and texture and delicately artful and with an amazing backdrop of the American River. For my meal it was only $68 in total (without beverages), and the best money I spent on dining in Kangaroo Island. I paid over twice as much for another 'fine dining' experience, and unfortunately they were not even close to veganising their offerings as well as the Chef(s) at Sunset. I would have happily dined at two more times at Sunset and at the exact same meal, then the other fine dining experience I had. I would definitely dine again multiple times at Sunset Food and Wine when I travel to KI next! Thank you so much for the AMAZING experience and so deeply grateful that you could accommodate my vegan...
Read moreIf you are spending any amount of time on Kangaroo Island and enjoy food, then you must prioritise getting a booking at Sunset Food & Wine. Simply, the food is delicious and wine priced very reasonably.
The food is seasonal, original, & so moreish! For someone that's fussy, I was thinking "wow" with each first bite then liking the plate after each last bite. Ingredients are locally sourced and of highest quality. Don't go the shorter menu; settle in for the full degustation - you won't regret.
Modest sized wine list caters to spectrum of drinkers from those looking for entry level to the most discerning palates. Even better, the mark ups aren't ludicrous (which is even more refreshing than the wine itself!).
Service is professional & attentive, but not pretentious. They cater to various requirements and have gone above & beyond whenever I've had a special occasion or even dined by myself.
Comparable restaurants in Melbourne or Sydney would set you back 2-3 times as much (or more). I'll be back any time I return to Kangaroo Island,...
