Having driven past the bakery in Stone Hut several times, yesterday I finally stopped in. Very glad I did. This spot is a gem for those exploring the Southern Flinders (especially if you have kids). I only grabbed a pasty and drink on this occasion but the rest of the menu looked great. The pies and pasties are what they are known for, but there were also meals available and a good sized selection of cakes, pastries etc. I noticed that there were even a few vegan selections on offer, which is not common in the mid north, so I chose the vegan pasty, and can confirm it was delicious. The interior and exterior dining areas are extensive and you even have a selection of great local wines. I believe they do wine tastings here as there was an area set up for that, but I didn't ask so you might want to check ahead of time. Alongside the outdoor dining area is a large high-roofed aviary with native birds, whilst the on the other side of the bakery is a small petting zoo area with kangaroos, goats, alpaccas etc. I also saw emus but they may have been in a separate enclosure. I'm looking forward to making the drive over again soon and taking my young cousin. I noticed there is also cabin accomodation on site and the staff I dealt with were friendly. There's a few good bakeries in the Mid North/Southern Flinders and I've tried most of them. So far this is...
Read moreI have loved this place in the past and have tolerated its decline because i thought it would be difficult to maintain the high standard of product that it produced under it previous owners. Some of the pies have tasted ok.
I don't appreciate being lied to though. Last time I was there I asked about the beef bacon and cheese pie " is it made here?" because is looked more golden and had smoother edges compared to the other pies. When i was reassured that it was made there I put aside my suspicions and bought it.
Biting into it I immediately knew it was a mass produced Mrs Macs Pie! One of the reasons it had fooled me in the warmer was because they had garnished it with some fresh bacon. When I confronted them about lying to me, they tried to justify the deception with slippery weasel words "we did make it here, we put the bacon on top". I am disgusted with this business... sell me a Mrs Mac pie from you hand made bakery if you like but don't lie to my face about it.
I wont be back and in my opinion they are on the downward slide. How can they hope to produce good pies if they think that a Mrs Macs Pie is worthy to sit in there warmer and be sold under their name? They have lost my trust and if they are prepared to lie about this, what else are they lying about? Save your money and buy yourself a good honest South Australian pie...
Read moreAbsolute best service and pies you will find anywhere! We called up Christmas Eve to ask if we could bring our little French Bulldog out with us while we have some lunch as we had our daughters visiting from Sydney. The NEW OWNER JONNO said that bringing the dog is not a problem but they are closed today getting organised for their Christmas lunch tomorrow. Before I said anything else he offered to fire up the oven and do us some pies if we wanted as he was there anyway. When we arrived we were treated to the most personable welcome, nothing was a problem we had the most delicious pies and despite our interruption of his prep for Christmas lunch on a day when he wasn’t even open he even gave us some complimentary deserts including his own hand made vanilla slice and a home made dog biscuit for our little Frenchie Doc! This is the epitome of good service and a reflection of South Australia’s friendly down to earth people.
