Surf Beach Cafe & Takeaway — Restaurant in Surf Beach

I'm not sure if everyone in Batemans Bay just has low standards or if we just got really unlucky with our batch of fish and chips.

When we got there, the wait was over half an hour, not a problem; however we were only notified after we had already paid.

We got a seafood platter for two with an extra 2 battered fish with chicken salt and a tub of tomato sauce. Upon asking what the battered fish was, the lady at the front was unable to tell us.

The fish was pretty standard, it wasnt anything to write home about but it wasn't mushy or too hard. The batter on the other hand was pretty awful, almost black in places and extremely hard to bite through. Felt as though I was biting through a hard shell into a bubble of cooking oil.

The scallops were mushy all over, despite the batter. The seafood sticks, actually decent, I'm not sure what happens behind the kitchen but whoever did these actually did well, congrats. The prawn cutlets were a mess of prawn meat in amongst the crumbed batter, unfortunately meaning that it didn't taste much like prawn at all. The calamari were by far the worst, it had the texture of hard rubber beneath a crusty oil-filled batter, needless to say; we didn't bother finishing them. Finally, the chips; these were overcooked, airy. Like those little tiny chips that have no potato in them? That was every single one.

Until they fix their recipe for the batter or take more care when cooking, go 5 minutes...

A cute little beachside cafe which is usually pretty busy so order ahead. We tried to purchase some chips last time we visited and was told it was a 40 min wait! ?? If you do manage to get anything eventually there are tables and chairs inside and out plus beach covered picnic areas just nearby with a playground as well for younger children. I have a feeling this cafe has changed in the past from being just a basic takeaway shop to being a proper cafe. I appreciate the coffee here now which is lovely but miss the original chips and cheaper prices. All in all though its a nice little place that everyone seems to...

Nooooooooo!!!! What happened?!? This used to be an old school takeaway with good old fashioned fish and chips etc. I come back after a few years and now its a 'hipster style cafe' selling basically coffee and cake. I mean, they still sell burgers etc, but the pricing! Woah! Black modern colour scheme, sit down coffee. The old takeaway is gone! No more decent burgers, expensive fish & chips. Now I have to go across the road to the other place for proper takeaway food at decent pricing at Surf Beach. The coffee is ok (hence not one star), but the prices for everything on the menu is higher than average....
