Went out for Easter Sunday lunch - easy half hour drive from Weston Creek in Canberra. Big establishment, roomy car park with lots of bike parking available too. Wide shaded verandahs, outside seating and plenty of tables inside. I didn’t know what to have as it was my first visit. I ended up with a plain mince pie and my husband had a pepper pie. They were both very good - mine was $7.70 and my husband’s was $8.80 but there was a 10% public holiday surcharge which is fair enough. The pepper pie is very peppery for those that love a good hit of flavour. They had plenty of staff. Free tomato sauce. Then I had to have a cake and that took a while to decide because I wanted to try the chocolate eclairs, the cruffins (a cross between a muffin and a croissant), the hot cross buns and so much more but in the end I couldn’t go past the lamingtons. They had strawberry and chocolate. I had chocolate and shared it with my husband. So good because the people here understand that the lamington does not go in the refrigerated cabinet where they dry out and lose their moist icing and soft sponge interior. These people are geniuses and have the lamington on the top of the cabinet so it’s as it should be - perfect!! We had a couple of coffees and they were good. I can’t...
Read moreSutton Bakery has long been a beloved spot in town, but it's with mixed feelings that I share my recent experience. It seems that since the change in ownership, the quality of their pies has taken a noticeable dip.
Previously, Sutton Bakery was known for its scrumptious pies that would leave you craving for more. Sadly, the magic that once graced their pie creations seems to have faded. The crusts have become too thick, and the fillings lack the depth of flavor I used to enjoy.
The selection, while still decent, doesn't quite live up to the high standards set by the previous owners. It's evident that there's been a shift in the baking philosophy, and it hasn't been for the better in the pie department.
On a brighter note, the warm and friendly atmosphere remains, as does the excellent service. The staff here continue to be welcoming, making the visit pleasant despite the disappointment with the pies.
In light of these changes, I hope that the new owners will consider revisiting their pie recipes to recapture the culinary magic that once defined Sutton Bakery. For now, it's with a tinge of nostalgia that I remember the pies of yesteryears while savoring their other...
Read moreThis will sound a bit scathing because I'm holding them up to the standards of Bungendore & Braidwood Bakeries. If you're undecided, go to one of those before you go here. As you drive in, the large, bright white concrete car park greets you with all the charm of your local McDonalds. Bright white, glaring concrete is horrible - a little bit of colouring thrown into the mix (cost $10) would have fixed that. Once inside, it becomes a very little bit more inviting. Basically it's a big square space with an "L" shaped counter running along two walls. Coffee is, of course, at the far side of this indoor arena. Coffee - not bad - but the food is ridiculously over-priced for what it is & inferior to the previously mentioned options. They have a couple of tables out near the car park but keep your sunnies on out there. This place is somewhere I avoid except for the odd coffee. They've stuffed up what could have been good. (The second star simply relates to its...
