Unfortunately, my experience at The Fox and The Hound was far from pleasant. I ordered the "fish of the day," which was cold in the middle, making me think it had been frozen. I mentioned this to the staff, who were very polite, and they went to ask the manager if we could get a replacement or a refund. The server looked scared to go ask the manager.
The manager’s response was that because we had already started eating, there was nothing he could do. The plate had the one bit out of the half cooked fish. We tried again, and the manager came out. He grabbed the plate and touch the fish in the center, loudly insisted the fish wasn’t cold, and dismissed my explanation loudly stating we sell fresh none frozen fish. He then returned with a new plate, but it included the same piece of fish from earlier that he touched and we took a bite out of and it was fried again, now placed on top of a fresh one. That means he had the cook refry it in the oil. We didn’t accept the replacement and left the plate untouched.
A nearby group of customers overheard the situation and asked us did this really just happen?? They decided to cancel their reservation. The manager responded by yelling at them, “You canceled your reservation? Then get out of my pub.” It was an incredibly unprofessional and rude way to treat both customers and staff.
Oh, and to top it all off, the bathroom was a complete nightmare. The water was brown, and there was a strong smell of sewage. That should have been a clear sign to walk out long before we even ordered.
I’m writing this review not just to warn others, but to shed light on the toxic management at this establishment. The staff were genuinely nice and apologetic, but they’re clearly stuck working for a manager who seems to have no idea how to treat people with basic decency. I’ve attached photos of the food as evidence, along with a warning for anyone considering dining here: stay far away from this manager. There are plenty of other places that will treat you with the respect you deserve.
I’ll never be returning, and I highly advise you don’t waste your time...
Read moreOur experience at the Fox and Hounds in Port Arthur was appalling. I ordered the fish of the day, which was frozen, tasteless, and completely inedible. When I raised the issue with the owner, he claimed there was no way the fish could have been frozen. To "prove" this, he touched the fish himself, declared it wasn’t cold, and then instructed the kitchen to recook the same piece and serve it again. This is completely unacceptable and unhygienic.
When I requested a refund instead of having the fish recooked, the owner flatly denied it, saying it couldn’t be refunded because the meal had already been started. He was intimidating, unapproachable, and dismissive of our concerns, and the staff appeared visibly afraid of him.
A group of tourists who observed the incident apologised to us on the owner’s behalf and said they were appalled by his behaviour. They decided to cancel their reservation in protest. Shockingly, the owner approached them and said, "if you're going to cancel then you can leave," rather than addressing their concerns.
The entire experience was disgusting – from the poor food quality to the shocking lack of customer service. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. Avoid...
Read moreWhere to start... We booked for 6:30 pm for dinner. Our allocated table was next to the window. The menu was limited, so we ordered our meal promptly, approximately 5 minutes of arriving. We did not see the starter (cheesy garlic bread) until after 7:30 pm. When it did arrive, it was a burnt offering that had not seen garlic in its life. Essentially, it was a burnt cheese roll. The main meal arrived quickly after that. As the table next to us had sent back their raw chicken schnitzel, my partner closely inspected his with surgical precision. Overall, he shared that the chicken was moist, but the crumbing fell off. On the other hand, my medium-well steak was still running around the paddock mooing and was tough. In fact, the mashed potatoes had turned pink from meat juice. The garlic sauce lived up to its name; however, the chef should have reserved some garlic for the cheesy garlic bread! With limited places to eat dinner in Port Arthur, this meal was very disappointing. Given, it was also one of the most expensive pub meals we had, while in Tasmania, we expected much better. I would not...
