We came here yesterday after a big hike for some lunch. Arrived at 1:30pm and went in to order, was told we had to wait til 2pm to order because they were too busy in the kitchen.. I said I only wanted to order hot chips. She said come back at 2pm. We were a little annoyed but all good, we got drinks and sat down and waited. Then 2pm rolls around and I go up to order and she says “we’re not taking any orders until 2:20” I said “we’ve already waited half an hour to order…” she looks at me and points to the chalk board that says “not taking orders for 20 minutes”. I looked around and the indoor restaurant area was pretty much empty, only a couple of people inside and a few outside. We ended up leaving because I wasn’t waiting 50 minutes to just order, then wait for food. I work in hospitality and know how a kitchen runs very well and was quite disappointed with this outcome. We ended up stopping in at Eltham pub on the way back and it was amazing! Won’t be coming back to The Channon...
Read moreGreat Japanese cuisine in a country pub. The sashimi plate was superb, with the sweet scallops taking the prize for deliciousness. The salmon and tuna were a little bland, suggesting 'frozen', and the kingfish was tasty. The grated daikon, pickled ginger, and wasabi were nice accompaniments, but the seaweed was the standout. I could've eaten a bowl of it by itself. Presented beautifully. Unfortunately, the very delicious octopus balls with the most delicious bonito flakes and BBQ type glaze arrived in a cardboard boat. Confusing to say the least. The Speckled Drongo pale ale was a fine pairing with the food. The lady serving behind the bar was friendly and welcoming, as was the chef. Moderately priced, but worth it if you enjoy good sashimi and Japanese food. There were also lots of sushi rolls ready for...
Read moreThe Channon Pub is fantastic as far as a pub goes. Warm service, people and a lovely atmosphere. Zero dramas makes it an extremely family friendly pub. But the food leaves a whole lot to be desired and it's insanely expensive on a weekend. Don't be fooled by the huge menu, what you get is really basic 'pub food'. Often something is missing in your order and you have to ask to get a tiny bit of condiments like ketchup. Everything looks and tastes like they're trying to squeeze absolutely maximum profit out of the meals. We hate on Federal Pub but at least the food there is really quality (even if the beers are twice the price of The Channon). We really hope the kitchen food improves. Feels like it doesn't take much effort to really put in some more flavour...
