Caledonian Hotel — Restaurant in Victoria

I don't usually leave bad reviews but due to the circumstances I feel it is now needed. I have ordered take away meals to be delivered locally 7 times from this establisment since October 2023. 6 of thoes 7 times I placed delivery orders the was something that was forgotten by the delivery driver usually being the salad. Around the 19th December 2023 I went into to the hotel with the intention of rectifying the issues as you can not fix issues your not aware of and to explain that im constantly inconvienienced with part of my orders being forgotten, I spoke to James (great bloke, easy going, good to talk to and had a good chat for 20mins) and informed him about the situation, he was oblivious that things were being forgotten, he appoligised and offered me a free bottle of coke, I politely declined and stated that my intention of being there was to inform them not try and get free things, although I did appreciate the offer. When parts of my order was forgotten the delivery driver would say that they will not charge me for the salad, which was good to start with, but shouldn't be used as an excuse on every occasion something is forgotten, if i didnt want the salad I would have asked for no salad, other than one order (My second time ordering) where I did get everything in the order. My most recent and very last order ill be making, I greeted the delivery driver and i was greeted with "I made sure I didnt forget anything" I had a chuckle and said thats ok, but guess what? No salad yet again! After I specifically asked for "Chips and Salad" to avoid confusion when ordering. I asked the delivery driver where the salads were and I got the response of, and I quote "ahhh...what ever it is is in there" while pointing to the takeaway box, and to then say, and I also quote " If theres anything wrong with the food department, tell them". Now I understand that delivery drivers just pick things up and deliver them, but playing the blame game doesnt work well with me. After shaking my head in disgust I was told "Maybe you have to specify, I dont know" I explained that I specifically asked for Chips and Salad even know the menu states "All parmis come with chips and salad" or "...with a side of chips and salad", and the delivery driver said that "he had the music on, so yeah" (meaning the guy I placed the order with). I went down to the hotel again and asked to speak to the manager, I spoke with Sandra and explained yet again of the above, after starting the coversation off with some constructive critisism that I have already been in previously and spoken with James, I was rudely talked over the top of when trying to voice my experience, interupted without letting me finish what I was saying, which only heated the conversation, and spoken to with arragance, and told that I needed to order the "deal" to which I explained that i had previously done that but received Coke, which is the main reason I asked for chips and salad to avoid any confusion, the bloke that took the order admitted that he didnt hear as the phone was breaking up, and my gripe isnt about the poor guy that seemed inexperienced, it's with the most disgracful and very disorganised customer service I've ever experienced, that could have been easily rectified with a simple procedure as a preventative measure to ensure it doesnt happen again ( I did explain a few ideas to James, and he was good about it, listened to my concerns and actively listened and clarified what I was explaining) . After spending $517, according to my bank statement, here over the course of 3-4 months on just take away meals for the convienience, I will now be taking my business elsewhere. Very friendly welcoming and service given/provided. Food was absolutely beautiful and fresh, definitely not shy with the portions served on your plate. The Shamrock hotel can surely use some tips from the chef’s here.The beer garden is fantastic, clean and comfortable environment too. The rooms are spacious, very clean and modern, same with the bathroom. Nice to see shampoo/conditioner and body wash is also provided. Shower was great and roomy. The bed was really comfortable. Nice kitchenette, with basic items as standard. I was surprised to see a coffee machine is also provided as not many places do which is fantastic, especially for coffee lovers like my self. Room service provided if wish to order from the pub, daily service also included. Location is great. It’s close to shops, supermarkets, bakeries, etc and a short walk to the port area. The hotel has changed hands, and the previous owner has stripped out all the furniture and decorations, so the Caledonian is now an empty shell with a LOT of work required. Obviously this is going to be a case of needing money to fix.

I hate giving low reviews of a place - this is not a reflection on the hard-working staff but it’s definitely the case where the services of an experienced pub/hotel manager for a few months would definitely help, as it seemed everyone had come in from a different industry and were definitely struggling a bit.

THE GOOD: it’s cheap, and the parma’s are excellent. They could quite easily charge another $5 per Parma.
