Well what a lovely surprise! Looking for somewhere to turn round in Gunbower, we noticed plenty of people and more cars stopping at an unpretentious venue with character! Not ones to miss out on anything interesting - we went in! Wow! Baking was underway for the day, and a steady stream of fresh pies, pasties and an amazing array of sweet and savoury treats were making their way out of the kitchen as we waited for our morning coffee. While we waited we admired the amazing array of vintage cast iron, and cast iron and enamel, cookware. We spoke to the chef whose collection this is, and discovered it's been many years in the making. Lovely people there! In the room next door, there are more fascinating collectibles for sale. We went and explored Gunbower after this visit, but were unable to resist and went back for pies at lunch...
Read moreWorst overpriced cafe lunch we have ever eaten… a garden salad came out half a small bowl of wilted leaves, gritty tomato’s and water logged cucumbers, sloppy and totally revolting. Even the chicken avocado focaccia was bland and even though the red onion was removed was totally overpowered with wet onion juice drowning the whole focaccia - gross! Coffee according to the locals reviews best coffee in town…. I couldn’t disagree more. Luke warm milk was what we were served instead of a latte. The lamb pie was full of gristle and jelly and the egg and bacon toastie was burnt , bacon dried out and egg hard as a rock. Should have turned around and gone straight back out the door when we looked in the Bain-Marie window, but we didn’t. What a disappointment. The service was terrible.
