This is indeed a little gem of a pub tucked away in the sleepy hamlet of Walcha Rd (about 20 km from Walcha itself). The sleeping accommodation is in a separate wooden somewhat newish building, and the room was very nice, and an obvious cut above the standard pub room you often find in Aussie rural pubs. Sleep came very easily in the comfy bed. It was effectively a motel standard room, minus the TV (perhaps reception is a problem in this little village).||||But, the welcome I received upon arrival was not very nice. Everyone has an off day, but in the hospitality game you do need to be able to lift and turn it on when a guest walks through the door. I don't expect to be fawned over, but I don't like being made to feel like an unwanted visitor. ||||I had made an email booking a week or so before I arrived, but when I turned up to an almost empty bar, the lady who spoke to me (who seemed to be engrossed in some paperwork), denied any knowledge of this booking (even though I offered to show her our email conversations on my tablet, but she was not interested in any of this). No matter, a room was found (I think I was the only guest that night actually).||||No smile was on offer throughout the exchange, no mention of dinner options (I felt it would be rude to ask any further questions, as it seemed she had no interest in dealing with me as anything other as an annoyance). So I retired to my room and snacked on bits and pieces I had brought with me and got stuck into my novel while tucked up in bed. Took a walk a bit later on in the sleepy village and soaked up the cool, clean air and the lovely old railway station (still in use).||||So, I had really been looking forward to this night away in the country, and while I have no issues with the room itself (and I hear anecdotally that the food on offer is very very good, and indeed a couple of years ago I had a lovely counter lunch there,); the poor welcome did take the edge off the whole experience, and I would be reluctant to stay...
Read moreI don’t normally write reviews about places I’ve visited but this place deserves to be screamed about from the roof tops!
This was our second trip to Australia with a lot to pack in to include seeing my partners family in Tamworth. Sydney, nice restaurants and a comfortable hotel but all a bit commercial for my liking. Still, a big tick off the bucket list. We traveled up the coast to Newcastle, fantastic views, just gob smackingly beautiful. Port Macquerie, did the tourist thing and visited the koala hospital place and Tacking point lighthouse.
Then ….Walcha Road Hotel on way to Tamworth. We recieved a really warm and friendly welcome on arrival, the owner (I think) couldn’t have been more pleasant! It was like being greeted by an old friend!! The accommodation was spotlessly clean, a very comfortable bed and all the bits and bobs you’d expect in a more expensive hotel were all present. Young Chelsea deserves a special mention, she looked after us so well, continuing the vibe that the owner had set. The food was great! I really didn’t expect a schnitzel to be on an Ozzy country pub menu but there it was, and, oh my God! It was amazing with lashings of gravy. Tracey had the pasta and it could have fed a small army! All beautifully cooked clearly by someone who cares. 10 out of 10 chef!! I honestly didn’t want to leave the next day. We will definitely be back!! Thank you all for the best stay we had in your...
Read moreWe were lucky to find the Walcha Road Hotel on Trip Advisor before we set off on our travels - the Information Centre in Walcha itself didn't know about it! It is well worth the detour and the sort of place that stays in your memory. The self-contained rooms were immaculate/comfy (no tv but who wants one in such surroundings). Food as promised in earlier review and a lot of thought taken - eg tomatoes for breakfast had been cooked with herbs rather than the usual rock hard semi-grilled variety you normally get. The whole place had a wonderful feeling of out of the way rural Australia (with a touch of an English pub about it) and we appreciated the opportunity of sitting on the verandah and in the dining room, chatting with the locals. Well done Suesann and your partner (Chef in charge) and your lovely lady helper who made us...
