We visited Hamelin Bay Wines in early May and it was well worth the small detour from the Bussell Hwy. The restaurant has fantastic views over down-sloping vines, a pond and grazing pastures beyond. Food portions were generous, competently prepared and reasonably priced, and the service friendly and efficient. I lack taste receptors for white wines, so I limited myself to sipping the reds, all of which I found noteworthy and better to my preferences than the average from the area, including the blend in the Rampant Red, the aromatic Malbec and the solid Cabernet Sauvignon. With limited capacity in the carry-on luggage, I purchased a very interesting special release Frankland River Shiraz and the 2023 Reserve Margaret River Shiraz. Taste is personal, but I found both to be very good wines and the latter a great shiraz that doesn’t require the “cool climate” epithet, often used to excuse a thin body and no...
Read moreWhilst visiting the Margaret River Region we decided to visit Hamelin Bay Winery for lunch and were very impressed with our choice of food and wine. We decided to go with the Hamelin Bay Ploughman's Platter to Share with a glass of wine each (1 red and 1 white) The wines we rated 7.5/10 and the Hamelin Bay Ploughman's Platter was 8.5/10. We would have rated it a little higher if the Gluten Free option was available as mentioned of the menu, but they said that they didn’t have any gluten free bread. We sat outside on the wooden table and benches and really enjoyed the picturesque scenery with views of the vineyard. If going for lunch it’s best to arrive just before mid day if you want a table, as by 1pm it was very busy with people waiting for table. If visiting the Margaret River Region, Hamelin Bay Winery should be on your places to...
Read moreBeautiful setting and what looked like a great menu. However our experience was somewhat marred when we asked which wine would pair well with fish and chips and were met with a number of scarcastic remarks (even bringing another member of staff in on the "joke") and zero assistance. It was not due to a lack of wine knowledge as she clearly had lots (when I asked for a Pinot noir I was politely advised that the region is not suitable for growing this varietal). I then tried to order something from the menu and was told I couldn't as it was busy and we hadn't booked. It was reasonably busy but all the indoor tables were empty so this seemed a bit odd. Overall I would go back and give it another go as it was nice there, but the customer service did leave a sour taste which didn't come...
