In recent years we have enjoyed our dining experience at Toby’s. In fact, on one occasion I was served the most magnificent Prawn Risotto dish I had ever tasted. So impressed was I that I asked to be introduced to the Chef. Based on these previous happy experiences, we invited our friends to meet us at Toby’s for dinner on Wednesday night and looked forward to sharing our special dinner with anticipation. Big mistake. Clearly, I should have consulted recent reviews before making our booking. The venue was as pleasant as we had remembered. The front of house staff were welcoming and attentive. Then came the food. I ordered the steak (medium rare). At $42 for rump steak, it did seem quite steep, but I looked forward to something special. What was served to me was a lump of meat, which could have been mistaken for “roadkill”, dumped on a mountain of chips and accompanied by a very tired salad. No sauce options were offered. The plate presentation was no better than what I would expect from a second rate Truckstop. Undeterred, I cut into the steak only to find that beneath the singed surface the meat was essentially raw. When I pointed out the condition of the steak to the table waitress, she happily offered to take it back to the kitchen to be re-cooked. At this stage I had formed the opinion that no amount of cooking would be likely to rescue this very poor cut of meat. I opted for cheese and crackers instead. When we visit Busselton, we always stock up on steaks from the Vasse Markets which we find truly excellent. The Vasse Markets are but a stone’s throw from Toby’s. Where the steak I was served on Wednesday night was sourced from, I cannot begin to imagine. I struggle to comprehend how any professional Chef could choose such an appalling cut of meat and then cook it so incompetently as to render it “Inedible”. Of the 4 meals ordered by our table, 3 were returned to the kitchen only partially consumed. Mine was untouched. I suspect that my Mate was so hungry he would have eaten the side plates. He was far from impressed with his fish and chips. This dining experience at Toby’s was thoroughly disappointing and will be our last. We did notice that the restaurant was virtually deserted, which was in stark contrast to our previous visits. Whoever is running the kitchen at Toby’s needs to consider an alternate vocational calling. Our 2 stars are for the front of house staff and table staff. They were very pleasant...
Read moreDinner at Toby’s Restaurant was nothing but exquisite again. The new chef has done wonders for the diners in the Dunsborough Ramada Resort. The entree of char grilled chicken with corn puree, pickled purple cauliflower, sweet potato and chimichirri was a flavour fiesta in my mouth as each bite was more delicious than the last. The mains were no ]t to be out done by the entree. My Margaret River Wagyu beef fillet cooked to medium rare perfection with the ‘made me speechless’ side of truffle mushroom duxelle which was also accompanied by paris mash potato with red onion jam, tempura enoki and shiraz jus to set me off to food nirvana. Boyfriend had the enviable wattle seed kangaroo fillet which was joined on the plate with perfectly cooked green beans, apple blueberry compote, sweet potato puree and a red wine jus to fill not only filled his belly but brought him much joy to enjoy food cooked so well. We weren’t going to have dessert when we headed down to dinner but the temptation of dark chocolate mousse and apple sultana crumble were too much to resist. The mousse was creamy and silky the way mousse should be but topped with a raspberry macaron with a side of fresh untouched seasonal berries was a delicious surprise to offset the creamy mouse with tart flavours. Boyfriend had the crumble and described it as very nice and delicious. We are definitely coming back again and again as I urge anyone to let go of any previous bad experiences here and come down to enjoy some...
Read moreWe stayed at this resort last year and had a great experience with the accommodation, so we decided to visit the restaurant on our most recent trip down south and were extremely disappointed. This is overwhelmingly the worst service we have experienced anywhere in Australia. Although there were two staff looking after a restaurant that never had more than 10 guests at any stage, we had to leave our table on four separate occasions to order a drink, had to walk to the front counter to get a dessert menu - and when the wrong dessert eventually found its way to out table, we had to return to the cake display with the waitress to physically point out the dessert that was ordered. Comically, when the icecream that was included with our dessert didn't come out - we had to place a separate order and were charged for a third dessert which was very frustrating. We then placed an order for a Jamieson Whiskey at the bar, and the server returned asking us if we ordered a Jagermeister and by this point we were so exasperated that we decided to leave. When it came time to pay, we gave our server a gift voucher and they said that if we wanted the change/credit from the voucher we should email the hotel the following day to organise. To be fair it would be a huge waste of time to...
