As part of a group of 10 walkers we staid at this Gasthof one night during a five day walking tour, staying the other nights in mountain huts.||As is common in many traditional Austrian establishments, the range of vegetarian dishes was relatively limited, but there were a few options. The menu included several locally sourced products, including Styrian beef for the meat eaters. Breakfast included a relatively wide choice of drinks and food.||The room we had was clean, well maintained, with modern furniture, a television and a well functioning free wifi. A boot room was available for drying walking boots (heated boot rack also used for ski boots in winter) and rain gear.||The service was simply professional, friendly and excellent - precisely what would be expected in a family run Gasthof.||The location is excellent for exploring the surrounding Gesäuse...

Read moreAn absolute hidden gem. Deep in the alps near the Gesäuse National Park is Kölblwirt in Johnsbach. Not only did we stay one night in their newer building (awesome) but the food was magnificent ! I had the Styria Beef steak which is a locally grown organic product. It was some of the tastiest steak I have ever had. Tender , juicy, well seasoned. And the next morning we hiked up to their other property, the alpine hut "Kölblalm" and saw where the animals were grazing freely. SO, the animals are treated very well, are raised with the mothers, never locked in some meat factory, and then processed on site, so farm to table is realized with the absolute minimal distance possible, a big plus for the environment.
