We stayed at the Hotel Bärnsteinhof for 4 nights over the Christmas period this year. We originally intended to stay in Linz for a few days, but after looking at numerous hotels on the Internet (which were all over €100/night) we decided that we would stay somewhere quieter and more rural. So we opted for the Hotel Bärnsteinhof, located in the quiet village of Aigen Schägl (approx 40 mins north of Linz) set in the heart of the Böhmerwald. The area is ideal for walking/trekking/cycling or skiing (the nearest ski slopes ‘Hochficht’ are only 15 mins away by car). ||||Upon arrival at the hotel, we were greeted by both Christian & Judith (the hotel's owners - Christian is also the hotel’s main chef) who immediately offered us a welcome drink and plenty of information and advice about the hotel, the surrounding area, etc..we were then showed to our room, which did not disappoint. We had chosen one of the suites, which was very spacious, with a lounge area and private balcony (with a view of the valley) and large bathroom.||||We had selected to have Half Board at the hotel, so dined in the hotel every evening. A delicious 4-course menu was served every evening. On our first evening (Christmas Eve) we were treated to an excellent cheese and meat Fondu followed by homemade biscuits and chocolates and champagne. Breakfast was also very comprehensive and had a very ‘healthy’ touch to it, which we liked - including a wide range of herbal teas (some of which Judith prepares herself), home-made smoothies and juices, fresh rolls, cheese, ham, eggs, home-made jams, cereals, etc...||||The hotel also has a “Wellness” area (Finnish sauna and steam room) and offers a wide range of spa treatments (massages, salt baths, wraps, etc) – Judith (who told us she had studied herbalism and alternative therapies) runs the hotel spa and takes a personal interest in the wellbeing of the guests, offering advice on both herbs and essential oils. Both my boyfriend and I tried the massages (vital and honey massages) and baths and found them very relaxing and enjoyable.||||All in all we had a wonderful break at the Bärnsteinhof hotel. Judith and Christian are top class hosts and offer guests a truly personal service – nothing is too much trouble for them. We would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for a peaceful and relaxing break and doesn’t mind being outside of Linz – excellent customer service, top quality food and...
Read moreThis place is simply amazing. I was looking for a hotel of mid range / low price for my stay and find this small hotel in Aigen. From entering the hotel, you feel it the family style of the property, what is shocking is how they as a family are able to keep the 4* standard, that international company would need 5x more employees to run this property. Rooms are neat and tidy, nicely designed with quality outfit. The food is just amazing, well presented, and well served. You feel as a "GUEST" that is cared about. On halfboard you get 4 course menu with 2/3 choice of main dish, leaving the dinner nicely full experiencing amazing service that can easily beat the branded hotels. Even the choice for breakfast is stunning for such a small hotel, 16 different kinds of mussli, frest fruits, nicely presented cheeses and eggs of your choice as a-la cart. F&B level is just a class. The sauna on 2nd floor is a wooden cottage placed in the yard of the building, very beutiful, clean, nicely equipped with comply drink inside the relaxation area. I was shocked, what I get for the price I pay. It is clear for me, that if I ever return to this area, and I certainly would, my choice for stay is with no doubt this fantastic hotel, and I would not even search for anything else. Talking as a hotel manager with 13 years of experience I must say the level of service is really well deserved and may be envied by a...
